Obituary for
Agnes Isabel Aikens
Agnes Aikens passed away peacefully at the Misericordia Health Centre in Winnipeg on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the age 94 years.
Born on August 1, 1924, Agnes spent the first few years of her life in Portage La Prairie eventually moving to Lavenham where her father was the CNR station foreman. Following her marriage to Dalton Aikens she spent much of her adult life accompanying him to his job assignments with the CNR at such locations as Lavenham, Transcona and Winnipeg. The loss of her husband in 1974 saw Agnes employed with Via Rail until her retirement.
Blessed with a great sense of humour and deep love of family, Agnes was also known to have a sharp wit as well as a sharp tongue that kept those that knew and loved her, constantly on their toes. Life was never dull when Agnes was present! Impish as she was she also valued things of beauty such as gifts received from her sons which were representative of her Irish ancestry. She exhibited a talent and skill of her own, in needle work and pottery. She retained her love for country living where gardening was a passion that gave her contentment at her country residence.
Agnes was predeceased by her parents Bertha and James Knox, husband Dalton Aikens, sister Doreen, brothers Jack and Barry as well as her beloved sons Morley and Derek whose deaths within the same year left a void in her life that could not be filled. She is survived by her sisters Jean Patterson of Winnipeg, Marjorie Besser (Bill Hendricks) of Valemont B. C. grandchildren Melanie (Darryl Paget), Sheri-Lynn and David of Edmonton and their mother Terri, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
Those wishing to do so may make a contribution in memory of Agnes to a charity of their choice.
