OBITUARY
Ruth H. Gammell
July 26, 1917 – December 8, 2018
Having said good-bye to family and friends over the last week, our darling beautiful Ruth sighed softly and quietly passed away at the grand age of 101. Ruth was born in Amulet, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her father, William Nixon; her mother, Gertrude Paul; her brother Delbert Nixon; her sister, Elizabeth Nixon; and her dear son, Bob. Ruth is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Ward; her sons, Bill (Dana) and Stuart (Debby); her daughter, Paula (John); eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, as well as her sisters, Vera Karst and Margaret Ramsay. Ruth had a remarkable and loving life with Ward. He was a pilot in training during World War II when he was introduced to Ruth, who was also in the RCAF. He knew instantly that she was the one, and luckily for him, she felt the same way! And so off they flew to enjoy living in five different provinces, travelling abroad, dancing, laughing, and ensuring their family home, wherever it was, was a happy one. They built a house in Central Saanich on a one acre property when they retired in the late 60’s and called it, « God’s Little Acre. » It was here that Ruth’s gardening talents really flourished and she sold dried and fresh flowers from her home to florists and to the general public. Ruth excelled at everything and her handicrafts included flower arranging, mosaics, needlepoint, ceramics, sewing, enamel art, as well as cooking. You should have tasted the warm pies made from her own organic apples! Ruth will also be remembered for her quick wit and ability to get everyone around her laughing.
The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff at the Saanichton Peninsula Hospital’s Extended Care Unit One, who looked after Ruth with care and heartwarming kindness over the last few years as well as her physician, Dr. Valerie Cowan. Pastor George Hodgson will be officiating at the « Celebration of Life » at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive in Royal Oak on Thursday, December 13 at 1 pm. When Ruth said good-night to her children, she always said, « Sleep tight. » May you sleep well now, our love.
