Imre « Emery » Nyers
1934-2018
It is with broken hearts that the family of Imre
« Emery » Nyers, loving husband of Magdi Nyers, announce his
passing after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born on
January 17, 1934 in Budapest, Hungary, he was a son of the late Jozsef
and Terez (Kerekes) Nyers.
Emery arrived in Canada in September 13, 1958 with his wife
and a 9 month old child, after spending 20 months in a refugee camp
and never looked back. He was a Freedom Fighter in the 1956 Hungarian
Revolution against the Russian occupation of Hungary. It was to flee
the country or die. He chose to live.
He became a Canadian citizen in 1964 and proclaimed
repeatedly that Canada was the best country in the
world.
He was a licensed car mechanic already when he came to Canada
and worked first at Chittick then at O’Brien Motors. Emery
went on to become a welder, steamfitter and instrumentation technician
and joined UA 213 in 1967. He worked at the Atlantic Sugar Refinery,
Bayside Power, NB Power, Irving Oil Refinery, Irving Pulp and Paper,
Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station and also at the Saint John
Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.
Emery was an avid fisherman and gardener. Had a big vegetable
garden beside his flower gardens and in the last four years he became
a chef. Emery could fix anything and everything no matter how small or
large. He loved to travel, went to Europe 11 times, to Las Vegas three
times and to Hawaii in 2013. He surprised Magdi on their
45th and 50th
Anniversary with a Transatlantic Cruise.
But most of all he was a devoted, loving husband, father,
grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed and there
are no words to describe it, by his family and friends.
Emery is survived by his wife of 61 years, Magdi; sons:
Emmerich « Jim » Nyers (Pam) and Raymond Nyers both of
Quispamsis; brother Stefan Nyers (Helga) of Vienna, Austria;
grandchildren: Jamie, Natasha, Matthew, P.J., Ashley, Monica, Alex and
Vicki; great grandchildren: Logan, Jayden, Brayden, Sarya Lynn,
Landon, Emery, Peyton and Bryceton.
In addition to his parents, Emery was predeceased by his son
Peter; brothers: Lajos, Gyula, Bela, Geza and Laszlo.
