Edith Sophia Carol Cote (MacKinnon)
Edith was born in Edmonton on September 19, 1941 and passed away at home, in Youngstown in her “big chair” on October 5, 2018. Edith was the third child of William Gordon & Emily MacKinnon, a younger sister to June & Jock, and a few years later a big sister to May. The family lived in NWT & Northern Alberta until they moved to Youngstown in 1952. Shortly after they moved to Youngstown her Dad got sick. The family had some hard times for a few years, but the whole family pulled together, worked hard, and got through it. Edith worked at many jobs during her school years, eventually got a job as a waitress at the Esso in Youngstown. She met Jack Cote and was married in Youngstown on May 17, 1968. Jack & Edith lived at many places in Alberta, mostly in the north. Their son, Leonard John was born in 1969 and daughter Patty Dawn joined the family in 1971. Jack worked for the TD bank but had to retire early due to health reasons. After his banking days, the family endured in many different things, from owning a general store to raising miniature horses. Edith & Jack did some travelling together and spent 10 winters in California. They enjoyed living and working at the Deer Meadows Golf Course during the summer months. Jack passed away in 1995 and Edith continued on with life without him for 23 more years. She eventually purchased her house in Youngstown and continued to work at the golf course and live in her holiday trailer there for many summers. She loved that job and talked about it all the time, along with all the good friends she met while being there. During her life time, she travelled as much as she could; NWT, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Cuba, Caribbean cruise, Mexico, coast to coast in Canada, and through many of the US states. Her highlights were Star fishing in BC, fresh lobster in NB, clam digging in NS and gold panning in AB. Edith loved to work and was a hard worker. She also loved to bake, and gave most of it away. She was a very generous lady. She loved all kinds of animals. Edith really enjoyed curling, and probably if someone would have asked her to curl, right up to her death, she probably would have tried. She liked watching curling on TV and you certainly didn’t try to phone her while curling was on TV.
Edith is survived by her son Leonard from Barrhead; daughter Patty (Kevin Soltys & his kids, Jake & Jaeden) of Strathmore; sister in law Betty MacKinnon as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and all her siblings. Celebration of Life will be held on November 24, 2018 at Youngstown Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. Memorial tributes may be made directly to the Youngstown Community Hall.
