Mary-Lou Rose passed away peacefully on September 28, 2018, in Red Deer, Alberta. She was predeceased by her husband, Alex Rose, her parents, Brock and Lorna Duncan, and her brother, William Duncan. She will be much missed by her children, Leslie Rose of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bill Rose (Kim) of Minneapolis, MN, Matthew Rose of Edmonton, her grandchildren Naomi Baranek and Zoe Baranek, and her many friends and family.
Mary-Lou was born in Edmonton, and spent her childhood there, in Lac La Biche and in Medicine Hat. She received B.A. and B.Ed. degrees from the University of Alberta, and started her teaching career in Calgary, where she met her future husband, Alex Rose. After marrying in 1959 they moved to Montreal, QC, returning to Alberta in 1968.
Mary-Lou and Alex made their home in Lacombe county in 1973. Mary-Lou taught at Lacombe Composite High School, where she made her mark as a dramatic, passionate teacher of English, and an inspiration to her students. After retiring from the position of Vice-Principal of LCHS, she continued to promote learning and literature by serving on the Parkland Regional Library Board and in the Alberta Library Trustees’ Association, where she made an invaluable contribution to library governance in the province. An avid reader and bridge player, Mary-Lou also loved travel, and was a long-time supporter of the Edmonton Opera and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
A memorial will take place in Lacombe in December.
