HASTINGS, Betty Joanne (nee Rogers) – Passed away peacefully on September 12, 2018 in her 95th year at Canterbury Gardens, Peterborough. Dearly beloved wife of the late Harold Elgin Hastings. Loving aunt of William Brent Rogers (Hanna Sandler), Cameron Glenn Rogers (Marilyn), Kevin Chalmers Wynne (Shelley), Laurel Jennifer Wynne, Bryan Armstrong (Janie) and Larry Armstrong (Hilje). Predeceased by her parents William ‘Bill’ and Ruth (nee Chambers) Rogers, brother Neil Rogers and sister Coral Wynne.
Born April 4th, 1924 in Carnarvon, Ontario, Betty moved with her family to Toronto at age thirteen where she completed her education at Jarvis Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1941. Betty worked supporting the war effort and then later was employed at Canada Bread as a book keeper. In the mid 50’s she became an Elementary School Teacher and taught in Uxbridge and Whitchurch Township through the 60’s. On March 25th, 1961 she married Elgin Hastings and together they operated a dairy farm in Stouffville until retiring in the late 1990’s. Betty enjoyed all aspects of farm life and work and continued her book keeping work for friends and local businesses including the John Deere farm equipment dealer.
Betty was well known for her excellent baking, and as busy as she was, made the best apple crisp and homemade pies and cookies. She attended Lemonville United Church and actively supported her local community through the church auxiliary ladies’ group.
Betty was a reserved, kind and gentle person, unless you mentioned her favoured Toronto Maple Leafs. She always had a twinkle in her eye and her wonderful smile lit up the room. Betty was a wonderful wife, sister, aunt and friend. She was well loved and respected by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday October 3rd, 2018 at the Lemonville United Church, 13523 McCowan Road at 1:00pm with visitation one hour prior to the service from 12:00 – 1:00pm. A reception at the church will follow with interment at the Peaches United Cemetery
