WALTER “DON” HEWEY
AUGUST 13, 1933 – SEPTEMBER 7, 2018
On Friday, September 7, 2018, Walter “Don” passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years.
Left to mourn Don’s passing is Marie, wife of 66 years, daughters Donna, Kathie and Sandra (Rennie) and son Stephen (Gisele). He will be sadly missed by grandchildren Kevin, Brian, Laura, Christopher, Danielle and Sean as well as great grandchildren Ophelia, Clark, Charlie, Alec and Connor. He is survived by his younger brother John (Opal) of London, Ontario and sister-in-law Shirley of Winnipeg as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Randolph, sisters Doris and Shirley, brothers Kenneth, Richard and Robert.
Dad was born in Caledonia, Nova Scotia on August 13,1933. There he met Marie and they soon married on March 29, 1952. He joined the Royal Canadian Armed Services Corps in 1953 and travelled to many postings including Victoria BC, Baden ON, Soest Germany and finally settling in Winnipeg in 1963. Dad worked for base transportation C.F.B. and finally retired as master corporal in 1978, receiving his certificate for 25 years of devoted service to his country. He was awarded commendation for having achieved more than twenty years of accident free driving from the Department of National Defence therefore ending his career with a perfect driving record.
Dad and Mom resided in St. James until Dad’s retirement at which time they moved to Anola where they completed the construction of their new home. Dad started his own company, D & S Handyman Service, where he continued working tirelessly, first with his son Steve and then his very dear friend Stan Evenson. In 2002, they sold their home in Anola and moved to Bird’s Hill until their most recent move in 2013, which ironically was a move back to the St. James area. He sold the chain link fencing business, so he and Mom could continue to travel, motoring extensively across Canada, Alaska and the USA.
Dad loved country music as he and Mom attended many concerts, festivals and performances that led them travelling to many destinations which would include an “occasional” trip to many-a casino.
Dad was a skilled carpenter who enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending Goldeyes games with Mom and watching golf on TV. He loved socializing, including the monthly breakfast club with longtime friends of the service corps. He always loved forward to a rousing game of Rumoli with family and friends or challenging Mom to a daily Scrabble game. Dad and Mom loved to take daily leisurely walks in the park embracing the beauty of nature.
We, the family, extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Joshua, Dr. George as well as the compassionate caring staff on the 5th floor at Grace Hospital.
At Dad’s request a formal service will not be held, however friends and family are invited to attend a casual celebration of his life on Saturday September 29, 2018 in the Harmony Room at Oakview Place Extendicare, 2395 Ness Avenue. Please drop by between the hours of 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. for refreshments and maybe share a story or two.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or a charity of your choice.
