Mr. Dale James Herman
February 25, 1940 – September 11, 2018

The bells are tolling for all of us tonight. Dale Herman died in the early morning on September 11, 2018. Not only is it a loss for our family, but a loss to the greater community.
Dale Herman was an English teacher at École Secondaire Iroquois Falls Secondary School for most of his long teaching career. As such, he touched the lives of so many members of the Iroquois Falls community. He was passionate about his work and he loved nothing better than to talk books with fellow readers. He was so well-read it was astounding.
He was in all respects a great man. Quick with a joke and a smile and he always had time for those around him. He was kind, gentle, without judgement, considerate, and generous. He saw the positive in everything. He never lost his sense of humour. He seemed to know everyone in town and you couldn’t leave the house with him without having many conversations with people wherever you were going.
As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was a constant source of support and encouragement, ready with advice when requested. He loved our mother unreservedly and continued to shower her with attention throughout their 55-year marriage.
He had a real sweet tooth and had tea and cookies after every meal. The candy jars were always brimming. He loved music of all kinds and a dram of quality scotch. He was hard to beat at cribbage and referred to himself as a good dancer. He loved baseball and cats, not necessarily in that order.
His life was full of people who loved him dearly. Florence, his wife; Tracy, Carolyn (Mark), Leslie (Raf), his children; Conor (Denise), Jessamyn (Tyler), Melanie, Megan (Phil), Brianna (Sean), and Olivia, his grandchildren; Kayen, his adored great-grandchild who gave him such joy; Louise and Reg, Murielle and Paul, Jim, and Hélène, his outlaws; Guy Cormier (Eva) and Phyllis Thériault (Georges), his half-siblings; and his long-standing book club, friends, and neighbours.
He was the very best of all of us. When you have a minute, pour yourself a rum and Pepsi, have one of your favourite cookies, and raise your glass. He would love that.
