Obituary for
Lionel Boutilier
With heavy hearts we announce that Lionel passed away on September 5, 2018 with his family at his side. Lionel will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley of 62 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Clyde and Melda Boutilier, and by his brother David. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his children Jeff (Cheryl), Julia (Cole), Gary (Shireen) and grandchildren Garrett, Paul, Dane, Trevor, Leah, Jade, Taylor and Danika as well as great grandchildren Zachary, Rudy, Alice, Olivia, Vanna and Leo. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Irene Stobart and Sandy Fisette as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lionel was born in Halifax on May 24, 1932. He attended Maritime Forest Ranger School, Nova Scotia Land Survey School, and received his Nova Scotia Land Surveyor Commission in 1953. He worked with the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources and received his commission as a Manitoba Land Surveyor in 1956. From 1961-1965 Lionel led the survey crew that established the northern 350 miles of the Manitoba/Saskatchewan boundary. During this endeavour his crew established the last monument placed on the 60th degree parallel of latitude demarcating the intersection of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and present day Nunavut. Lionel finished his career in 1988 with the Manitoba Land Titles, Department of Attorney-General as Examiner of Surveys.
He married Shirley in 1956 and they raised their family in St. James. Lionel was an active volunteer at Sturgeon Creek United Church and Sturgeon Creek Community Centre for many years. He loved spending time at the family cottage at West Hawk Lake, especially when the entire family was able to be there together. Lionel loved to laugh and could always find humour in most situations. He loved the wilderness and went on countless canoe trips with family and friends. On one special trip he followed the route of the Hudson Bay Company all the way up to York Factory. Lionel exemplified lifelong learning by reading and discussing a wide range of topics, especially Canadian history. He also instilled the importance of physical activity to his family by being an active walker and runner for most of his life. Family was very important to Lionel and he loved spending time with everyone. The world lost a very nice man today.
The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care Lionel received while a resident at West Park Manor.
Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, with Rev. Deborah Murray officiating.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, a donation may be made in Lionel’s memory to West Park Manor Personal Care Home at 31 Grant Ave, Winnipeg, R3R 1X2 or a charity of choice.
