In Loving Memory Of
Joan Genille (MacAlister) Yates
Joan Genille Yates passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at the age of 87 years.
Joan was born January 14, 1931 to parents A.K. and Selina Watts. She spent her early days growing up in the Pipestone Creek area and helping her parents run the Pipestone Creek store. Joan loved being from the country, but was very proud of the fact that, when she was in high school, she was able to stay in the dormitory in the city and attend the Grande Prairie High School.
In 1941, Joan married Iain MacAlister and moved down the road from her parents’ to his homestead. The couple raised three children on the Millbrae Farm: Lawrence, Robert, and Vicki. When Iain passed away in 1970, Joan made the move to Wembley and stayed in the teacherage while she taught at the school.
In 1973, Joan married George Yates and moved north to the Yates family farm at Buffalo Lakes. In 2014, after George passed away, Joan moved to Grande Prairie where she resided until her passing.
Through the years, Joan wore many hats and she made sure she wore them well. Joan was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She was an author, teacher, historian, farm wife, weaver, and a storekeeper. She often talked about life at Pipestone Creek and enjoyed walking with her family down memory lane. Music was a passion of Joan’s, one which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She spent much of her time dancing, singing, and playing the organ.
Joan will be forever loved and remembered by her children Lawrence (Janice), Robert (Beverley), and Vicki (Sheldon) Hotte; grandchildren: Kathy-Jo, Iain, Jennifer, Laine, Chanelle, Danny, Naomi, and their families; sister Pat Gerow and her family; and step-daughters Brenda Hensch, and Glenda Yates.
She was predeceased by her daughter in-law Pat MacAlister.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 2:00pm, at Dimsdale Hall. Pastor Dave Friesen officiating.
The family thanks you for your love.
