Gordon died peacefully on August 16th, surrounded by his family. He is survived by beloved wife Allie of 60 years, and children Cathie McCabe (Barry), Carol (Patrick Culver), John (Robin Benitz), and Peter; cherished granddaughters Kate Culver, Julia Hendra, Sarah McCabe and Alison Hendra. Predeceased by father Frederick E. Hendra, mother Margaret S. Hendra (Lamb), and brother F. Stanley Hendra.
Born and raised in Toronto, Gordon pursued his post-secondary education at Victoria College, University of Toronto (1945-49), and then at Wycliffe College for his Masters in Theology (1949-52). After his two-year placement at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in Toronto, he left his hometown, Alberta-bound and became the Rector for the Parish of Rimbey from 1954-57. He then moved south, to Calgary, and became Rector of St. Mark’s Anglican Church. It was there that he married wife Allie and became father to Cathie, Carol, John, and Peter. In 1965, he became Rector of Holy Trinity Church in Winnipeg. Four years later, the family moved to Kingston, and St. James Church. After almost a decade as its Rector, he took a position as the Director of Program for the Diocese of Ontario, later becoming the Executive Assistant to the Bishop and being named Archdeacon. His last church was St Mark’s, Barriefield, where he was Incumbent from 1992 until his retirement in 1994.
The family wants to thank the staff at Breakwater Park, Arbour Heights and Dr. Louis Kennedy, for all their care and support to Gordon in his final years.
Gordon truly loved his family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humour and he brought joy to so many. He lived a committed, selfless life, leading with grace and humility.
The family will receive friends at the Township Chapel of the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home 435 Davis Drive (Centennial at Taylor-Kidd) from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 23rd. The funeral will be on Friday, August 24th at 11:00 am at St. George’s Cathedral.
