Richard Harry Alexander Nelson
March 4, 1946 – August 11, 2018
It is with sadness that the family of Ron Nelson, beloved husband and father announce his passing on Saturday August 11th at the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg after a courageous 3 1/2 year battle with ALS.
Ron will be remembered by his loving wife Lorna; his children John (Christy) and Andrew; brother Ken; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Heather and Bruce MacMillan; nieces Paula (Kirk) and Kirsty (Chris); and so many good friends too numerous to name.
He was predeceased by his father John; mother Stephanie; In-laws Charlie and Winnie Marshall.
Ron was born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End and was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage. He graduated from Technical Vocational High School starting a printing career at Moore Business Forms Limited and Stoval Advocate and ending with a 30 year career with the Winnipeg School Division #1, retiring in 2007 from his beloved Churchill High School as Chief Custodian.
Ron met and married the love of his life Lorna in 1974 and they were blessed with two wonderful sons; in 2000 welcomed their ‘daughter’ Christy into the family. Ron was so very proud of all 3 of them bragging about them whenever he could.
Hockey, baseball and football were passions Ron enjoyed from an early age until his death. He loved his Jets, Twins, Blue Jays and Bombers. His special passion was trains, big, small, real or toy, it didn’t matter. Ron became a member of the Vintage Locomotive Society and worked his way from Porter to Trainman to shovelling coal as a Fireman in his beloved #3 Engine, a lifelong dream that became reality.
Ron accepted his diagnosis of ALS with dignity, courage and grace, never complaining, always answering with a smile, he was ‘fine’. He continued to enjoy life one day at a time and kept such an upbeat attitude he passed it on to all who were there supporting him.
Divine Liturgy will be held Monday August 20th at 10:00 AM at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish 965 Boyd Avenue. Internment to follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 4000 Portage Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to ALS Society of Manitoba, the Vintage Locomotive Society Inc. or Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish.
