Mary Hanec (nee Jakubchak)
September 18, 1917 – July 30, 2018
Fifty days short of her 101st birthday, our dearest mom, grandma and great-grandma Mary Hanec quietly passed away in her sleep at her home at Donwood Manor.
Born on the farm in Drifting River near Ethelbert, Manitoba to Pauline (Stefaniuk) and Jacob Jakubchak, Mom was the eldest of nine children. Like many of her generation she left high school early to find employment in the big city. Mom regretted not having the chance to finish school and always encouraged her family to further their education. Reading was her passion, and in her later years she was able to take the time to indulge this love of books by reading one to two full length novels a week. She instilled this joy of books in both her sons as they also became prodigious readers. Ever the adventurer, in her 60’s Mom decided to learn how to swim.
After Dad’s death in 1992, Mom lived in her own apartment until she was 93. Mom was a fabulous cook who mastered all the traditional Ukrainian dishes and later in life developed a fondness for trying new and varied ethnic foods, particularly Chinese cooking. She also enjoyed a good game of canasta and working on table size jigsaw puzzles, where her motto was « start at the corners ». Mom had a great sense of humour and a quick wit, which she exhibited at many family gatherings.
Mary was an incredibly caring mom, grandma and great-grandma. Her greatest joy was spending time with her three grandchildren as they grew up and looking after them whenever needed. She would walk to the ends of the earth for her family and believed in treating her children equally and with love and respect.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Harry, her son Irvin, her brother Steve and sisters Kay, Alice, Wilma and Eugenie and brothers-in-law Henry, Gus, Victor and Steve. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law Cec, grandson Jon, granddaughter Kyla (Rob), great-granddaughter Sara; son Harvey (Janis), granddaughter Robyn (Jason), great-grandsons Xander and Nixon; sisters Pearl (Jack), Helen and Emily; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Donwood Manor for the wonderful care Mary received during her time there.
A private family service and interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. In memory of Mary donations may be made to Donwood Manor Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
