Georgina « Gina » Stone
1944-2018
Georgina Stone – 73, Hilden, passed away
Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
Palliative Care Unit, Truro. Born in Alresford, England, baby Gina
with her mother, left Liverpool, England aboard the Britannic for a
fourteen day crossing, arriving at Pier 21 on May 23,
1945.
She spent the next 12 years in East Noel, the small community
to which she felt a lifelong connection. Gina was first born to George
Trueman Densmore of East Noel and Beryl Rosalind Densmore (nee
Goodall) of Alton, England. She was predeceased by her
parents, husband Russell (2008), grandparents, many aunts, uncles and
cousins both in Canada and in England.
She is survived by daughter, Julie (Randy) and son, David;
grandchildren, Quinn, Emily, Lucas, Alex and Jakob; brothers, Frank
(Linda), Peter (Deanna), Andrew (Anne); sister, Wendy (Howie
deceased); nephews, Nicholas, Matthew, Douglas and Joey; nieces, Jenna
and Angela. In Ontario, she is survived by brother-in-law, Carman;
nephew, Scott and niece, Kimberly. Also, she is survived by Aunt
Doreen of Windsor, and in England, Aunts Rita (Jim), Pat, Pam and
Uncle Malcolm, as well as many cousins in both Canada and
England.
In 1957 the family moved to Hilden. On the family farm, Gina
much preferred the outside work to housework; tending cattle, haying,
driving the truck and tractor and cultivating strawberries. Gina
graduated from Brookfield Rural High School, where soccer was a
favourite. As the goalie, she led the team to winning the
provincial championship, a first for the school. Success
Business College followed and as a legal secretary Gina worked in
Truro and Halifax. At Sun Alliance she met Russell Stone,
married in 1969, built a home in Hilden and raised their
family.
Gina devoted her life to her family, supported school and
church activities, including teaching Explorers. During summers she
went to the cottage on Brule Shore, her happy place. An avid sports
fan, Gina knew many: football, golf, curling, tennis, soccer, baseball
and hockey. Her involvement was such that if a tense
championship was on TV she would have to stop watching, record it and
watch later only after she had calmed down. She enjoyed playing lawn
darts, Wii sports, board games, Skip-bo, and daily crossword puzzles.
A fierce competitor, she often won. She liked giving answers we
couldn’t get, and straight forward advice on how to do
things right! Although loyalty and devotion to family was most
important, Gina held a keen interest in the events of the world, often
chiding others who did not share that interest. Gina was a truly
wonderful cook and meals with family around the big table will be long
remembered and deeply missed. She went out of her way to make sure
each person had that special something.
Thank you to the nursing staff and Doctor Smith of the
Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, whose
expertise and presence helped so very much. Also, thank you to Lisa
and Doctor Henderson for your special touch caring for Gina while she
was in her home.
On Friday, August 10, at 1 pm there will be a private family
graveside service in Hilden Cemetery. Following, family and
friends are invited to drop by Gina’s home, 2200 Irwin Lake
Road, to sit and talk a while. Light refreshments. Donations
in memory of Gina can be made to Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation
Centre, 2220 Irwin Lake Road, Hilden NS, B0N 1C0.
