Ruth Rosemary Burr passed away Monday July 23, 2018 at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Steinbach, Manitoba.
Ruth will be remembered by her children, Bob (Dorothy) and Dave (Lois). Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren, Mike (Margaret), Chris, Jennifer, Grant (Karen), Glen (Claire), six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Ruth is also remembered by her sisters, Ruby, Marylou, Dianna (Charlie), brother Stan (Carm), brothers-in-law Aime, Ed and Ralph and sister-in-law Lucy.
Ruth was predeceased by Allan, her partner of 64 years, eldest son Harry and his partner Judy, brothers George, Leslie, David and sisters Grace, Margaret, Barb and Jean.
Ruth was born in Giroux, Manitoba to Alex & Mary Burns. She was the oldest child and helped care for her siblings and worked on the family farm. In 1942, at age 17, Ruth moved to Goodlands, Manitoba. It was there that she met and married her husband, Allan Burr on October 27, 1945. Ruth and Allan’s life were always centered in the community of Goodlands. Ruth and Allan were partners in life as well as partners at work, first with a freight service operating between Goodlands and Brandon and later operating “Burr’s Store” until 1987. After operating the store for 38 years Ruth & Allan decided to retire.
Retirement brought a new stage in their lives, time to relax, travel, enjoy a comfortable home built in Goodlands and for Ruth, many happy hours in her yard. She had always enjoyed her indoor plants as well as some flower gardens while at the store, but in retirement they bought two extra lots just for her vegetable garden, flowers and fruit trees. And so, for the next 22 years, Ruth enjoyed taking this yard from a blank canvas to a rainbow of colours.
In the fall of 2009, at age 84 and 87, Ruth and Allan sold their home and moved to Steinbach to be closer to family. Allan’s health had been deteriorating and owning and caring for a home and grounds which was once easy for them became harder. The move brought Ruth back closer to many of her siblings whom she enjoyed visiting over the past nine years. Ruth loved to talk either in person or over the phone. She had many stories to tell about her long and satisfying life. She felt she had been very lucky to be blessed with relatively good health for so many years. She was a “glass half full” type of person, appreciative of the many folks that made a difference in her life, appreciative of her many friends over the years and especially appreciative of her family.
We give thanks for a long and satisfying life, for family and friends and the many caregivers who helped in so many ways with care, compassion and comfort.
A Celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fellowship Community Church, Waskada, Manitoba.
Memorial donations may be made to Fellowship Community Church Box 262 Waskada, Manitoba R0M 2E0, Haven Group Foundation (New Expanded Personal Care Home Project) 177 Woodhaven Avenue, Steinbach, Manitoba R5G 1K7 or to a charity of one’s choice.
