Obituary for
Karl Melendy
Melendy, Karl Gladstone, born Monday, May 13, 1929, passed peacefully away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. Karl was a proud business owner, and operated Melendy’s for 50 years in downtown St. John’s. He proudly shared his love of Newfoundland with tourists from all over the world and enjoyed working with his daughters and grandchildren throughout the years. Karl is predeceased by infant brother George, brother, Jack and his wife Dorothy, as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law. Leaving to mourn his wife of 61 years Rita Melendy (nee Churchill), his daughters, Karen (Wayne) Vallis, Holly (John) Dalton and Carla (Robert) Ivey. Grandchildren, Amanda (Andrew) Halliday, Karl Vallis, Amelia (James) Hickey, Emma Dalton, Matthew and Brandon Ivey, and great granddaughter Eva Halliday, sister, Sylvia (the late Rennie Gaulton), brothers-in-law, James (Ruth) Churchill and Ross (Sonia) Churchill, niece Tina (Corey) Chaisson, and nephews Trevor Gaulton and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Churchill, as well as a large extended family. Special Thank you to the staff at The Glenbrook Lodge, and to Donna McCaskie and Judy Patey of Compassion Homecare. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm & Monday, July 30 from 10am-12pm. Funeral service to be held at Barrett’s Chapel on Monday, July 30 at 2:00 pm. The family ask’s people to wear polka dots to the funeral service as they were Karl’s favourite. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations to the Glenbrook Lodge or a charity of one’s choice may be made in Karl’s memory.
