Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
Kay (Kathleen) Fukumura (nee McNeil) – June 22,1934 – July 2,2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kay, aged 84. She is survived by her daughter, Christine, son Blair, sister in law’s Margaret McNeil, Rosanne Yoshimasu (Paul), Clare Matsuo (Sam), niece Janet (Russ) and nephew Frank (Rhonda) as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by husband Tony, son Luke, brother Pat, mother Christine and father Murdoch McNeil.
Kay was born in Winnipeg, worked for the Investor’s Group in the mortgages department and was an active member of the Legion of Mary in St. Edward’s Parish and at the Franciscan Friary where she assisted in various charitable causes including communion breakfasts for the blind.
In 1968 she met Tony Fukumura and after an impressive first date, where he whisked her away to a Harry Belafonte concert, dressed to the nine’s, she was in love. Six months later, they were wed and spent a happy 46 years together until Tony’s passing in 2015.
In 1981 Kay became a provincially licensed day care provider and for the next twelve years, welcomed hundreds of children into her home, providing them a fun, yet strict, environment of care.
Kay was a loving mother and active participant of the church. She was a member of the CWL, brought communion to the sick and pinched perogies with the seniors at St. Gerard Church.
Her commitment to life long learning and the Catholic Church were passions for her. Although she dropped out of school after grade nine, she continued to take night school courses to improve her education. In an essay from 1950 titled “My Fundamental Belief”, she wrote “I believe that my entire life is only a preparation for a life to come and not an end in itself.” We take comfort in that belief as well.
A funeral mass will be held for Kay at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 2300 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. Mississauga on July 13,2018 at 11:00 am, followed by a memorial celebration and interment of her ashes at Assumption cemetery in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Winnipeg, Manitoba in August.
Kay was a supporter of Catholic missions including the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to them or to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
