Archibald ‘Archie’ Gold Hamilton, a lifelong resident of Stratford passed away peacefully in his sleep at Wildwood Care Centre (St. Marys) on Sunday June 24, 2018 in his 90th year. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Elaine Caroline (Collins), daughters Patti Hamilton (Nick) of St. Catherines, Merri Fergusson (Gord) of Burlington, Sherri Hamilton (Tom) of Harrington and Evelyn McGovern (Dan) of London. Archie was a proud and loving Grandpa to Michael, Holly, Ross (Ashlee), Jillian, Erin (Trevor), Benjamin, Emily, Andrew, Lauren (Matt) and Gregory. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Knechtel (Stewart) and a number of nieces and nephews. Archie was the son of the late Archibald and Mary (Elliott) Hamilton and is predeceased by his brothers Ian (Ruby), Hugh (Mary) and Robert (Doreen). Archie began his career as an insurance adjuster with Morden & Helwig in 1951. He started his own firm Jaemar Insurance Adjustors Limited in 1970 with business partner Jim Ferguson. As a business man his handshake was as good as his word. During these years, he indulged a love of fishing in northern Ontario with a group of fellas from the Stratford area known as the ‘Lucky 7’ (sometimes!). Archie retired in 1990 and for the next 25 years he and Elaine spent winters at their home in Oldsmar, Florida. Summers were spent along the shores of Lake Huron cottaging in Port Elgin and Gobles Grove or trailering at McGregor Point Provincial Park. He instilled a love for this area in his children and grandchildren. Along the same shores is Camp Kintail, a place dear to Archie’s heart. He served on the Board for many years and worked tirelessly to see McDonald Lodge built in 1979. Archie had an infinite repertoire of jokes on any given subject and was gifted at telling them as well. None of his children inherited that skill! Archie could turn his hand at any project – driveway skating rink, swimming pool, surfboards, trundle beds, rug hooking, any home repair, to name just a few.
In keeping with Archie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of life will take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Camp Kintail ‘Space to Grow’ campaign or Stratford Perth Rotary Hospice Foundation through the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford 519.271.7411. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
