Shirley Ann Levere
July 16, 1933 – May 13, 2018
On May 13, 2018 at the Golden Plough Lodge, Cobourg, at the age of 84.
Beloved daughter of Hazel and Charles Hoselton (both deceased). Devoted sister of John (Evelyn), Maxine Tremills (Ralph), and Jean Chilibeck (Jim) and predeceased by brothers Hawley (Lillian), Carl (Mildred), and Gordon (Shirley).
Shirl the Pearl was deeply loved and admired by god-daughters Lynda Chilibeck and Sofia Gabbani. She was a cherished Aunt of her many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She shared a special bond with her nephew Stephen Hoselton and her « Haileybury family ». Countless holidays and adventures were spent with the Chilibecks (Jean, Jim, Peter, Lynda, Susan, and Rosalie) in Northern Ontario and at Chili’s Cove on Lake Chemong.
Shirley grew up the sixth of seven Hoselton children and loved telling stories of her childhood in Cobourg and of her siblings. All typically involved an element of mischief! She adored her big brothers and was part of a very special sisterhood with « Maxi and Jeannie ».
Shirl the Pearl had a zest for life that was unmatched. As was her intelligence and her love of nature. Her sense of adventure is reflected in her travels: from Lapland to Thailand; from the Canadian Arctic to the Australian Outback. She had an incredible sense of humour, love of a good laugh, and an ability to tell a great joke – complete with the perfect accent.
Shirley was a perennial student. She graduated from Journalism at Ryerson and later obtained her B.A. and was an ordained Minister of the Unity School of Christianity. She was forever curious about the world around her and the mysteries of life. She had a strong desire to grow spiritually, and read voraciously on Truth studies and metaphysics. Shirl was a book lover and an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction and newspapers – consuming multiple newspapers on a daily basis and of course clipping and saving articles for her loved ones.
Shirl was a writer, an artist and a creator. She wrote several manuscripts and stories, her favourite being the « Happy Coona » series written for her treasured niece Rosalie. Her distinctive penmanship will be forever remembered, and this was reflected in her extensive correspondence with friends and family that spanned decades and continents. She loved current events and was known to have frequent (and at times mildly heated) political discussions with her brother-in-law Jim!
Shirl lived and worked around the world. From her early days in Cobourg, London and Toronto, she moved to more exotic locations such as London England, Sydney Australia, Kansas City Missouri, Montreal, Vancouver, and White Rock BC. She loved her days in British Columbia and spent time with close friends and particularly her beloved niece Susan. Their stories of crabbing on the pier, watching the sail pasts, and midnight harvests always brought a twinkle to her eye.
Shirl returned to Ontario in the mid-90’s and lived in Peterborough before returning to her home town of Cobourg. There she lived at St. Peter’s Court (known to Shirl as the « cottage »), and was involved in the local theatre group and enjoyed a circle of close friendships. During this time she was an incredible Great Aunt to Dario, Katie, Sofia and Julia. She shared with them her love of sunsets, the phases of the moon, flowers, gardens, and swimming. She delighted in her days at Allen Lake – learning to kayak at the age of 70! Her favourite excursions were to Haliburton and Bancroft where she would happily spend an afternoon at the quarry. Rain or shine.
Shirley moved to the Golden Plough Lodge in 2013 and received exceptional care from the dedicated team there.
Shirl will always be remembered as an avid rock collector. She walked thousands of kilometers over her lifetime and would invariably return with a special rock (or two?) she had spotted on her travels. Shirley would “surely” be delighted if, on your next nature walk, you discovered a special rock or stone that could be collected in her honour.
A private family memorial ceremony will be planned at a future date(s) to scatter Shirl’s ashes in some of her favourite places, and to remember a life fully and beautifully lived.
