Gary Earle Dalton Joseph Harmer
1942-2018
Gary Earle Dalton Joseph Harmer, 75, of
Moncton, passed away, peacefully, on May 14th at the Moncton
City Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Saint John, NB,
he was a son of the late Cerdic R. and Inez (Dalton)
Harmer.
He was a former Fire Fighter with the Moncton Fire Department
with over 30 years of service.
Gary, an exceptional hockey player who demonstrated both
dedication and ability, played for the Moncton Beavers in 1959-60, and
won the Maritime Title. It was from this starting point that Gary’s
talent began to be noticed. He was signed to the Boston Bruins
sponsored Niagara Falls Jr. Flyers, and later went on to play for the
CHL’s Minneapolis Bruins, and was later traded to the St. Louis
Braves. In 1965-66, Gary continued his professional career by playing
for the IHL’s Toledo Blades, and spent the following two years with
the Des Moines Oak Leafs. An injury caused him to retire from his
professional career, but he came out of retirement to play with the
Richibucto Bears who won the Eastern Canadian Title. This team later
became the Moncton Bears, with whom he won the Atlantic Canadian
Intermediate Title. Gary was inducted to the Moncton Wall of Fame in
2006.
Survived by his wife and best friend of 21 years, Fern
(Landry); daughter, Krista (Harmer) Miller of Riverview; step
children, Diane, T-Rog & Ritchie LeBlanc of Moncton; sisters,
Sharon (David) Carmichael, Sandy (Garth) Hickman; brother, Larry
(Rose) Harmer; all of Moncton, grandchildren, Devin Brent Miller,
Connor Gary Thomas Miller; step grandchildren, Jerry Babineau, Crystal
LeBlanc and younger grandchildren, great grandchildren plus several
nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Gary was predeceased by his sister
Colleen Harmer Fenwick of Lower Sackville, NS.
Special thanks to the staff of 3600 Palliative Care,
especially Lori and Murray.
Our Family Chain is broken
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by
one the Chain will link again.
In honouring Gary’s wishes, there will not be any
visitation or funeral service.
Donations in Gary’s memory to the Hospice Greater Moncton
would be appreciated by the family.
