“There is nothing sweeter than the gift of a true friend”
Shirley Evelyn SORENSON
June 17th, 1954 – March 25th, 2018
It is with heavy hearts, and weeping spirits that we announce the passing of beloved wife, mother, aunt, sibling, friend and confidant Shirley Sorenson, succumbing to her battle with COPD at 5:32 PM on Sunday, March 25th, 2018 surrounded by family and loved ones at Brandon Regional Health Center, especially her daughter Melanie who was by her side night and day. After a long fight, Shirley is freed now to join her parents Arthur Christ Sorenson, and Myrtle Nita Sorenson.
In passing Shirley leaves to grieve adored husband Robert Ohrling, her six darling children Damien and Heather Grace, Allie, Melanie and Robbie Sorenson-Ohrling and recently reunited son Steven. Shirley also leaves her legacy in her dear grandchildren, Brandon, Kurtis, Joseph, Ileana and deceased granddaughter Sapphira. Additional family includes deceased brother Douglas Sorenson, survived by his wife Cathy Sorenson, and her sister Gloria Bacala, who survives her loving husband Wayne. Shirley is also a loved aunt to Nieces Carrie Ann and Kristin and nephews Chris, Noel, Sven and Bjorn and their children Cierra, Brianna, Evan, Tasha, Crystal, and Tiffany.
Shirley was a loved family member, and wonderful friend to all those who were blessed to come in contact with her. Her warm spirit and loving nature made her an instant mother figure to all friends of her children, and like a sister to her friends and coworkers. No matter who you were Shirley would always welcome you in with open arms and often a warm hug! Shirley was a devout animal lover, and had a soft spot in her heart for all animals big and small, but none did she hold as dear as she did her darling cat, Christmas. Shirley loved relaxing after a long day and losing herself in either a crime show or one of her favorite game shows. A busy body by nature, Shirley enjoyed busying herself around the house, baking, cooking meals, crocheting, and sewing. Most of all, Shirley treasured the time she was able to get to just sit around and reminisce with family or friends who would stop by their home. She also loved all kinds of music and could often be found with a record or CD blasting in the living room, dancing and singing the time away with her husband.
Shirley spent her formative years in Grant Park High School, but saved her graduation to help lift her eldest daughter through the last years of her schooling, graduating side by side in 2001 from Horizons Learning Center. Her learning was not limited to merely completing high school however, as Shirley’s thirst for knowledge kept her returning to various classes over the years to enhance her hobbies, as well as to help keep up with the times technology and work wise. Always a woman with a flair for the dramatics, Shirley loved acting, taking multiple classes throughout her life to enhance her skills including an acting course at Brandon University. Her biggest accomplishment came performing in Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” in October of 1989. As her family grew, the song “Puff the Magic Dragon” came to life through Shirley, and now serves as a treasured memory for all of her family.
Shirley worked in multiple roles throughout her life with great success. Her final professional chapter was spent over approximately the last ten years working for Midwest TeleServices International. Shirley was an adored co-worker and will be especially missed by her closest friends Judy, Pauline and Bryan, the former two who were even able to make it to her bedside in her last days to share some love and laughs.
‘He saw you getting tired,
And a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms around you,
And whispered “Come to me”.
With tearful eyes we watched you,
And saw you pass away,
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest,
He broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.”
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shirley’s honor to a local no kill animal shelter. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at a later date. Information on said celebration can be obtained through a member of the family.
