Obituary Overview
Lovingly Remembered
How we will all miss those megawatt “Ross Giles smiles”!
Bernard “Ross” Giles was born in Selkirk, Manitoba but grew up in Melville, Saskatchewan. There he met Margaret Rose Wildeman. They married in 1960 and moved to Regina in 1967 with their family of four children.
Degelman Industries played a large role in Ross’ start in business. He was one of the founders and first employees and served as General Manager until 1992. After Degelman, Ross was a partner in McKay industries until he retired in 2012. Ross became a Chartered Accountant in 1963 and in 2001 was granted the prestigious Fellow Chartered Accountant designation. He served as a lieutenant in a reserve artillery regiment winning many contests for fastest azimuth calculations and targeting. Ross was also a member of MENSA.
Ross will be remembered as an entrepreneur and is recognized as a leader in the agricultural equipment industry in western Canada. He was a board member of many industry associations including PIMA, FEWA and ICAEW. Regina was his base of operations until Margaret’s passing in 2002.
Among his favourite pastimes were camping and fishing. Every summer Ross enjoyed the annual trek to BC with the family while his favourite country music played from the 8-track. No one was allowed to sleep until the trailer was perfectly leveled! He also loved reading, antique firearms and collecting miniature brass steam engines and life-size old (and new) trucks.
In 2003 a chance meeting with a teenage friend, Betty (Lowes) LaFrenz, resulted in a whirlwind romance and marriage. They had many wonderful years together with several cruises and winter escapes until his dementia made travelling impossible. Even though his memory was fading he could still remember the old tales and loved to sing.
Ross is survived by his beloved wife Betty, his children Michael Giles, Trevor (Susan) Giles, Wanda (Joe) Jandrisch, and Ian (Crystal) Giles and step children, Jeff (Behnaz) LaFrenz and Tammy (John) LaFrenz. Ross was close to his siblings and leaves behind brothers Phillip Giles and Brett (Marie) Giles and was predeceased by his sisters Linda and Elizabeth. He took joy in and loved his several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ross was predeceased by his parents and his first wife Margaret.
Life celebrations will be held in Calgary and Regina on dates yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society.
