OBITUARY
Doug Warner
September 30, 1920 – March 12, 2018
Harold Douglas (Doug) Warner died peacefully at his home in Niagara Falls on Monday, March 12, 2018. He was 97.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Geraldine (nee Beck). Also by his sister, Audrey Warner and brother-in-law Al Murchie. He is predeceased by his brother, Ken Warner and sister-in-law Bernice (Halfpenny), and by his sister-in-law Rosalind Clark and her husband John.
He leaves behind nieces and nephews Kathryn Warner (late Don Beckett), Anne Warner (Doug Reilly) Elaine Warner (Joe Laxton), Jim Clark (Doreen), Stephen Clark, Emily Jewett (Paul), Donna Clark; many great-nieces and nephews, and long time, loving friends.
Doug was born on September 30, 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario to parents Harold and Pearl Warner. During WW2, he served in the artillery reserve while at McMaster University. After he graduated in 1943, he signed up for the infantry so he could be sent overseas. As luck would have it, he served as a lieutenant and military trainer in Vernon, B.C. After the war, he began his career with Borden’s Dairy in both Peterborough and the Niagara region. Doug then became a high school teacher, teaching business subjects in Peterborough and Niagara Falls for many years. He was also on the faculty of Niagara College.
Doug married the love of his life, Geraldine Beck, in 1948. Together, Gerrie and Doug travelled the world; a highlight for them both was their Round the World cruise in 2001. They also enjoyed many years at their cottage near San Souci, sailing, swimming, fishing and hiking around the beautiful islands of Georgian Bay. Until recently, Doug had been actively involved with the Sans Souci and Copperhead Association. He also served as a Township of the Archipelago councilor.
Doug was a man of many interests and talents. A skilled woodworker, he produced a telescope for viewing the stars and planets at the cottage. He was very proud of his grandfather clock, which took him three years to complete. In his workshop, he refashioned old kitchen cupboards to make an intricate wall system, with hidden doors, that neatly contained all his small hand tools. He invented and fashioned many original devices: among them, a water sprinkler system, security alarms and a clever method of using counterweights and pulleys to assist in opening and closing the doors of his cold cellar and cottage work shed.
The family gives special thanks to Sandra and the caring, professional staff of Sandra’s Home Health Care, who have provided exceptional assistance to Gerrie and Doug.
In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of his long life will be held at CHRIST CHURCH, 4750 Zimmerman Avenue, Niagara Falls on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2:00pm
Donations to Christ Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
