MACKINNON, Margaret (“Marjorie”) Joseph – 89, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 22, 2018 at Parkland at the Lakes in Dartmouth. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on March 19, 1928 (St. Joseph’s Day), she was the daughter of the late John Leo Dee and Kathleen May (O’Connell) Dee. Marjorie’s family immigrated from Newfoundland to Canada in 1938. Marjorie graduated from Mount St. Vincent in 1950, and entered the Social Work program at the Maritime School of Social Work. She was awarded a Masters degree by St. Francis Xavier University in 1952. After working with the Catholic Children’s Aid in Toronto until 1955, she embarked on a five-month travel adventure through Europe. Upon returning from Europe, Marjorie worked at the Montreal Children’s Hospital from 1956 to 1958. She returned to Halifax and married Myles in October 1958. Marjorie raised her family but continued to work in social work with the Maritime School of Social Work and also the Dartmouth School Board. She enjoyed spending her summers with family and friends at their summer cottage in Margaree Harbour. Upon Marjorie’s and Myles’ retirements, they enjoyed travelling and spending time with their children and grandchildren and extended family and friends. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Myles, sisters Marie Dee, Gladys (Fellows); she is survived by her sister, Frances (Casserly), Lee-on-Solent, U.K. and her children Myles Barry (Victoria), Neil (Aileen), Sheila, all of Toronto, and Peter (Cindy) of Raleigh, N.C. She will be greatly missed by her six grandchildren Emily, Julia, Catherine, Sarah, Rachel, and Joshua and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces/nephews. Her family would like to thank the team of Shannex Parkland at the Lakes whom have provided Marjorie excellent care and love over the last few years, particularly the kind and caring third floor staff at Glasgow Hall. Visitation will take place 5:00-8:00 pm on Monday, February 26 at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. Funeral mass will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, February 27 at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 10 Maple St., Dartmouth, Fr. Jim Richards officiating. Burial will follow Gate of Heaven cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
