WILSON (PYNE), Kathleen Jean – Age 93, of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully at home on February 16th, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Born on February 29th, 1924 at home on the McCormack Road in Yarmouth, Kathleen was a leap year baby, celebrating her birthdays on March 1st. Kay was the only daughter of the late Amanda Maude (MacIntosh) and Avard Pyne. Kay is survived by her son, Gordie and daughter, Gloria Wilson, both of Yarmouth; grandson, Gordon Jr. Wilson; grand daughter, Lorena Elizabeth Kaye (Eric) Wilson, of B.C.; her faithful companion, Precious and many nieces and nephews. Kay was predeceased by husband of 57 years, Gordon (Benny) Wilson, whom she met in Saint John, New Brunswick and married on April 13th, 1942; and brother, Avard ( Bubby) Pyne. Kay began working at the Paradise Restaurant in Saint John at the age of 16. During the War years she assembled ammunitions at the factory on Water Street in Yarmouth. For many years she worked at the Cotton Mill in Yarmouth and was one of the highest paid female employees. From 1962-1973, Inspired by a visit to a car hop in Saint John, Kay and her partner and life long friend Laura Letteney became owners and operators of the “Flintstones Car- Hop”. Kay’s career continued on in establishing a successful “Kay’s Rappie Pie” business and “Kay’s Assorted Sandwiches” business. In 1976 Kay and her daughter Gloria assumed ownership of the “Snack Place Restaurant” on Water Street in Yarmouth. In 1978 they opened a new “Snack Place” and continued on in this very successful establishment for 42 years. Together they also owned the Burger House in Barrington Passage, Wilson’s Family Restaurant and restaurants in the Kmart and Yarmouth Malls. She remained actively involved in her business up to the time of her illness baking pies. Kay was a well known entrepreneur at a time when it was so rare for a woman to own and operate a business. Her success exceeded even her own expectations. Kay was well known and loved for generosity to all, a trait that she inherited from her mother. Her employees often remark that she was the “best” boss they ever had. She provided employment for many and was very proud to work with her family members. She loved to travel, especially to her winter home in Florida. Her passion in life, besides hard work, was renovating and decorating her homes. She was a very stylist, elegant and graceful woman. Kay was so appreciative of the loving support shown to her by her special niece, Gail Ann and husband, Gary Frost for their loving support over the years. Appreciation also goes out to Laurie Hitchens and Cindy (Cotter) Courtney for their unconditional support through this trying time. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Victoria Order of Nurses, Dr. Riley and the Palliative Care staff, Home Support, Dr. Marais and Rev. Bill Newell for the compassion shown to Kay and her family and friends. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M.
