Joan at the age of 81, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Joan was born the third of three daughters on November 24, 1936, in Brampton, Ontario. Her parents, Melina (née Manseau, of Lake Linden, Michigan) and Neil Moore (of Grey County, Ontario) met and married in Detroit, Michigan.
Growing up in Southern Ontario, Joan enjoyed drawing, riding horses, visiting her uncle’s bakery after school, and going for weekend drives. She had a close relationship with her parents and older sisters, Shirley and Hazel, and very fond memories of visits from and to family in Michigan.
Joan graduated from the Chatham Collegiate Institute and then attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Ontario where she met her husband, Bernard Tierney (of Ayr, Scotland). Bernard became a foreign correspondent, and they travelled extensively with postings in Ottawa, Paris, and Washington, D.C. during their marriage. Joan was endlessly creative, and she produced varied pieces of art through her life, including woven wall hangings, watercolors, and pottery. Joan enjoyed gardening and her affinity with nature often inspired her artwork. She illustrated a plant guide for Brookside Gardens in Maryland, USA. Toward the end of her life, Joan was a prolific knitter and she produced hundreds of colorful scarves for cold winter weather.
Joan is survived by her sister Hazel, her daughters Danalyn and Robin Dee, her grandchildren John-James, James Michael (Glenda), Ian (Irene), James Benedict, Jackson (Riddy), and Lara, and by her great-grandchildren Daisy and Quinn. A Memorial is being planned for late spring/early summer in Ontario.
