Matejko, Theresa Stella (nee Kobus)
Theresa (Kobus) Matejko, 90, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, with family at her side, passed away peacefully at LHSC University Hospital on Friday, February 2, 2018. Theresa was married to Raymond Matejko who preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Daniel (Anne), John (Susan), Anne (Bill) Abbott, Michael (Melanie) and siblings Rose Zdzinicki and Paul Kobus. Predeceased by her son Robert and daughter Carolyn. Theresa had eleven grandchildren: Donald, Matthew, Brian, Amanda, Jacqueline, Christine, Jaron, Eric, Breanne, Lauren and Brittany, as well as 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Theresa was musically involved in her church, first at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Chicago, then Five Holy Martyr’s in Chicago and before her retirement, St. Albert the Great in Burbank. As a music director, she had the honor of directing the choirs and playing masses for Bishop Abramowicz as well as His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his visit to Chicago in 1979.
Theresa was a person who found joy in helping others; and who made a career of caring for her family. Theresa moved to Canada in 2014 to live near her daughter Anne, allowing Anne to reciprocate the loving care her mother had shown her during her youth. Theresa was a person who had a strong belief in God, who followed the Lord and lived her faith. She was a hard working, selfless and humble person who toiled ceaselessly to build her treasures in Heaven rather than on earth. One day she hoped “to direct the heavenly choirs and meet Saint John Paul II.” Theresa will be remembered not for who she was, but for the countless lives she touched so greatly.
Visitation will be held at St. John the Divine Church, 390 Baseline Road West, on Saturday, February 10th from 10 o’clock until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 o’clock. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Justice, Illinois at a later date. (John T. Donohue Funeral Home)
