Elsie Doris Roberts nee Miller
On Sunday, January 28, in her own unassuming way, our beloved mother, grandma and great-grandma left this world to be with her Lord and is reunited with husband, Alf and children, Paul and Barb.
Elsie was born in her grandmother’s home on Pritchard Avenue. She lived with her parents Martin and Barbara and four siblings, attending Cecil Rhodes and Daniel MacIntyre Schools. Mom and dad met in the choir at Zion Apostolic Church, and had their first date under the clock at Eaton’s. They married just before the Second World War conscription deadline in 1940.
Elsie’s ‘northern adventure’ started shortly after when she joined Alf in Sherridon. She was kept busy with her growing family and helping Alf with the jewellery store. In 1953, she had the dubious honour of being the first female paying passenger on the CN train to Lynn Lake. They lived the first 60 of their 75 year marriage in the North, raising 7 children.
Elsie was a deeply spiritual woman. She shared her faith in many ways: playing the piano at church, leading ladies bible studies and in her rich prayer life. She was a gentle, strong, wise, loving friend and mother. Her sense of humour was always bubbling just below the surface and she would crack us up with her irreverent ‘asides’.
She had a great curiosity toward the world around her and enjoyed writing her thoughts down in prose and poem. In her later years, she loved sitting on her balcony, watching the world go by. “If I were younger, I’d study the clouds, and write a book. »
Her surviving ‘kids’ (we were always her kids) Bill, Paul’s wife Jan, Barb’s husband George, Dave (Mariann), nephew Ron (Carol), Ted (Janet), Ruth, and Mary Jo (David) miss her more than anyone can know. Her 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren hold her as close to their hearts as she held them. She took so much delight in her family. She was so proud of them.
Thank you to her Agape Villa community and the Donwood Manor staff for helping mom to get as much as possible out of life and a special thanks to the wonderful caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care. You were the major reason mom and dad were able to stay at home as long as they did.
Rest now, mom…until then.
Funeral will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 10:00 am at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
If so desired, donations can be made to a charity of your choice and mom loved spring bulbs, so plant a few in her memory.
