Obituary for Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Davis (Maki)
Martha Elizabeth Davis
March 4, 1926 – January 25, 2018
Martha passed away quietly on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the home of her son. Martha Elizabeth Maki was born on March 4, 1926 in Murillo, Ontario as the first child of John Maki (Kimpimaki) and Elsa Willhelmina Sainio, both born in Finland. She grew up in Oliver Township, attended #3 Oliver Township School and graduated from the office and accounting program at Fort William Collegiate and Vocational Institute. She worked for a local accountant upon graduation, then at the Hoito Restaurant.
Martha married William (Bill) Robert Davis on May 12, 1943, just prior to his departure over seas. On the completion of Bill’s army duty, he and Martha bought a farm, on the fourth concession off John Street Road.
Martha was a devoted mother and spent her life dedicated to the needs and education of her family and creating a warm and welcoming home. She was very accomplished with domestic arts, keeping her family warm and well dressed and the home decorated with her needlework, sewing, knitting and crocheting.
In 1953, Martha and Bill sold the farm and bought a house in what was then the Township of McIntyre, now Strand Ave., Thunder Bay. In the late 60’s, she and Bill built a camp at Hicks Lake where 4 generations of family and friends enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, waterskiing, swimming and numerous hours of comradery.
Once the children were gone, Bill and Martha moved from the house to an apartment on Walkover St., then to North Brodie St., then in 2014 to Lakehead Manor Seniors Home. Martha and Bill celebrated their 72 Wedding Anniversary together on May 12, 2015. Bill passed away the following month, June 25, 2015 at age 94. In October 2016, Martha moved to Conmee Township to live with her son Don and family. Martha enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the pets play, the neighbour working in the fields, the wildlife and the beautiful view.
Martha was predeceased by her parents, John Maki (Kimpimaki) and Elsa Willhelmina Sainio of Kakabeka Falls; her brother Oliver Maki of Thunder Bay and husband William (Bill) Davis.
Martha is survived by 7 children: Fred (April), Joyce, both of Thunder Bay, Don (Ellen) of Conmee Township, Edith (Kevin) of Murillo, Shirley of Bracebridge Ont., Tom (Cheryl) of Ottawa Ont., and Lloyd (Solonge) of Gatineau, Quebec. She has 15 grandchildren: Chris, Shane, Amanda, Tashia, Angus, Megan, Nathan, Kelly, Stephen, Anne, Alannah, Hunter, Dylan, Jessica and Travis and 16 great grandchildren: Kreighannah, Zander, Oryanna, Sarafin, Damon, Legacy, Shea, Jamie Lynn, Conner, Madison, Eliam, Camaël, Elenore, Emile, Chloé and Miguel.
Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Martha Davis will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 1:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, officiated by Rev. Randy Boyd. Luncheon to follow. A private interment will take place at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Murillo.
The family would like to express their appreciation to her visiting caregiver’s Barb and Leeanna, and the staff at The Manor House ADP for their dedication, compassion and care. Donations may be made in memory of Martha to St. Joseph’s Care Group – Alzheimer’s Day Program.
