Passed away peacefully at Bethell House Hospice, Inglewood, on Monday January 22, 2018 in his 87th year after a 3-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
Bob was born June 28, 1931, in Windsor, Ontario, and grew up there. He trained as an optometrist in Toronto and practised for 2 years in Port Hope, where he met Isobel MacLeod (registered nurse). They married in July 1954 and moved to Windsor where Bob continued to work for 6 years as an optometrist. He began taking courses to qualify as a math teacher and started teaching at Walkerville Collegiate in Windsor in 1960 a few months after Patti was born. Doug and Marilyn were born in 1962 and 1963, respectively. The family moved to Oakville in 1966, when Bob transferred to Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga (2 years) and then Erindale Secondary School (until his retirement in 1989). Bob and Isobel relocated to Hillsburgh in 1991, and they have enjoyed being a part of this cozy, friendly community ever since. Patti married Ken Daley and had children Kaitlyn (22) and Shannon (20). Doug married Kim Barton and had children Callum (25), Emily (23), and Mallory (17). Marilyn married John Lewis and had children Will (16) and Tim (13). Bob competitively encouraged his infant grandchildren to call him by his first name so it would be their first spoken word.
Bob was predeceased by his brothers Neil and Gordon.
Bob was calm and patient, with a dry sense of humour, and he rarely raised his voice. His analytical mind made him a formidable opponent at cottage board games, a master at backing trailers into impossibly tight spaces, and an ace at packing the car for a long family trip. He was a consummate DIYer, who could build or fix just about anything. He loved being with family and friends, making up bad puns and sometimes words, doing Sudokus, napping in his recliner, cooking soups and muffins, and having his “5 o’clock”. He had good hair.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Hillsburgh Baptist Church, 21 Trafalgar Road, Hillsburgh, on Saturday February 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. Interment at Glen Oaks Cemetery, Oakville, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hillsburgh Baptist Church or Bethell House Hospice.
