Currie, Evelyn Alfreda (Kaine) – with great sadness, the family of Evelyn Currie announces her death on January 18, 2018, at Hospice Fredericton surrounded by her family. Evelyn was the much loved wife of the late Robert W. Currie and the daughter of James Garfield and Charlotte Annetta (Pond) Kaine. Born in McAdam, NB in 1924, she lived most of her life in Fredericton in the communities of Devon and Nashwaaksis. After graduating from Fredericton High School, her father suggested that she train as either a nurse or a teacher and she graduated from the Provincial Normal School in 1942. However, being no more inclined to teach than she was to go into nursing, she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in the fall of 1942 and served in Fredericton and Saint John during WWII until her honourable discharge in 1946, having attained the rank of Sergeant. After the CWAC, she attended a business college in Fredericton where she met her future husband. She worked in a number of administrative positions until, like many women of her generation, she turned her energies to her home; supporting her husband, raising her children, enjoying her grandchildren and caring for her mother. Her grandchildren and her great-granddaughter were her favourite people and her one regret was that she didn’t have more years with them as their life stories unfold. Evelyn was an active member of the Nashwaaksis United Baptist Church, its Sunday school, Ladies Aid, Morning Out and seniors’ groups and served in the church choir for many years. She was a Dominion Life Member of the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Union (Charles and Frances Harvey chapter). She was also an active supporter of Green Hill Lake Camp and was a member for many years of the Nashwaaksis Y’s Menettes group. Evelyn was grateful to all of the members of her community and church family who after her husband’s death provided her with a ride to the many activities that filled her days with purpose and companionship. She lived in the same home for more than 50 years and believed that she had the best neighbours in the city. After moving from her home to Shannex, she appreciated all of the staff who provided her with support during her final years and all of the friends and family who came to visit.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother Albert Smith, and her sisters Ialeen Rushton (Olis) and Jessie Bickford (Charles). She will be terribly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Eric (Dawn Fryer), daughter Susan (Bev Bramble), grandchildren Erica Currie-Fraser, Brittany Fraser (Herb Strickland), Alex Bramble (Jessica Ouellet) and Tyler Fraser (Colin Lang), great-granddaughter Elise Evelyn Ouellet Bramble, daughter-in-law Diane Fraser (Doug), sister-in-law Peggy Smith, and many nieces,

nephews, cousins and friends. She particularly appreciated the love and friendship of Avard and Lois Rushton, Mary and Barrie Billingsley and Hazel MacDonald; and the support, friendship and companionship of her neighbour, friend and caregiver for many years, Elizabeth McAllan. We would like to thank her family doctor Gordon McDonald and her care givers at Fredericton Hospice for their support and care.
Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Monday, January 22, 2018 from 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Chapel on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 2 pm with Rev. Lawrence Meade officiating.
Interment will take place in Sunny Bank Cemetery, Fredericton, NB at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations to the Green Hill Lake Camp, UBWMU, Hospice Fredericton or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
