Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory of
It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Merle Marie Straub on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of almost 56 years, Ambrose; parents Ben and Theresa Schier; sisters Genevieve Nikles, Anne Johnston, Alice Lambrick; brother Russell Casper Schier; son-in-law Clinton Weese; and loving granddaughter Jeannie Straub.
Merle is survived by daughter, Marlene Weese of Saskatoon; and son Lorne Straub (Carol) of Pense; much loved grandchildren, Sharleen Weese Maley (Jason), Karen Weese Bell (Howard), Lauren Straub, David Straub (Jackie), and Elana Straub (Sean); cherished great grandchildren, Alexandra Maley, Stephen Maley and Anya Bell; sister-in-law Millie Hauck; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Merle was born at Mazenod, SK, the second oldest of Ben and Theresa’s five children. She was married to Ambrose Straub on November 24, 1942 and settled on the family farm at Pense, raising Marlene and Lorne. Upon Amby’s retirement from the farm, they moved to her new dream home in Pense, then to a condo in Regina (the Atrium). Shortly after Amby’s death, Merle moved to the Marian Chateau, then to Royal Oaks Care Home and lastly to Parkside Extendicare, where she remained until her passing.
As a young woman Merle had varied employment but loved her nursing profession the most, working in Winnipeg, Prince George and Regina. As a farm wife she excelled at homemaking including baking, cooking, gardening and decorating. She enjoyed many crafts such as painting, ceramics and needlepoint. Social activities with her friends usually included playing cards. She played an active role in her church at Pense. Family was very important to Merle. Through her letter writing, phone calls and travels she kept in touch with relatives near and far. Her spontaneous loving smile and witty remarks will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family thanks all of Merle’s caregivers for their generous love and support, particularly Dr. Stephen Bester.
A FUNERAL MASS will be celebrated at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, 3239 Garnet Street, Regina, SK on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with lunch following at the adjoining church hall. Interment will follow the lunch at Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4001 East Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK.
