Obituary for Oga Hiebert
Hiebert – Olive Hiebert of Brooks, Alberta, was born May 8th 1923 at Smoky Lake, AB at the home of mid-wife Baba Stefan and passed away December 27th, 2016 at Sunrise Gardens, Brooks, Alberta. Grandma Olive was born into a large Ukrainian family. Her given name was Olga but on her first day of grade one her older sister Jenny decided there were already too many Olgas in the school of Smoky Lake. She told little Olga to tell the teacher her name was Olive and it has been Olive ever since. She married George Hiebert on August 20th, 1950 at Smoky Lake. Despite living in Brooks for 66 years, Smoky Lake and “The Farm” were always home for Grandma Olive. First with her children, then grandchildren and great grandchildren, countless trips were made to Smoky Lake fostering an appreciation for Ukrainian Culture and love for our aunts, uncles and cousins from “Up North”. Before marrying, Grandma Olive attended Three Hills Bible Institute for five years. She was a member of Brooks Evangelical Free Church, taught Sunday School for twelve years and was also a member W.M.S. (Women’s Missionary Society). Her love for Jesus was immense and in her later years she was waiting anxiously for the second coming of her saviour. Grandmas home was always open and if you showed up at 4:45 pm you could be assured a great supper. She loved cooking and baking and feeding the people at the table. Her leisure time was filled with gardening and picking berries, reading home making magazines and keeping up to date on the news. For the last 18 months she resided at Sunrise Gardens and we would like to thank the nursing staff for doing a great job. Also a thank you to Grandpa George for attending to her everyday during her stay at Sunrise Gardens. A beautiful example of living out ‘Till Death Do Us Part’. Olive will be sadly missed by Husband George Hiebert, sons; Rob, Brad (Val) and Don (Tammy) Hiebert all of Brooks, Ab.; daughter Karen Grove (Gordon) of Duchess, AB; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews; two sisters Stella Kapitaniuk (Bill) of Smoky Lake, AB, Grace Deverian of San Marino, California, and one brother Leonard Jarema (Elsie) of Smoky Lake; sisters in-law, Lauretta Jarema and Ellen Jarema of Smoky Lake, Ab and Betty Jarema, of Kelowna B.C. She was predeceased by parents Joe & Kate Jarema; sisters Jennie Kolotyluk and Mary Mark; brothers, Donnie, Jack, Bill, Alexander (Sandy) Jarema; sister in-law Sandra Jarema.; brothers in-law Frank Mark & George Kolotyluk. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 31st, 2016 at Thom’s Funeral Home and Reception Centre. Shane & BJ Grove Officiating. Graveside service took place at Brooks Cemetery.
