Obituary for Yvonne Smith (nee Brunet)
Yvonne Smith passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017 at the age of 77 years. Wife of Jim R., mother to sons Jim D., Daryl and Mike and grandmother to Tanis, Roanne, Maren, Hannah, Sam, Grayson, Scarlett and Amber. Sister of Claudette, Claire, Irene and Albert. Step mother to Myrna and children Tony, Candace and Ashley and their children. Born in Sudbury Ont., Yvonne came to Calgary where she worked for CFCN-TV, Wood’s Christian Home and the Calgary Board of Education. She was very private person who didn’t believe in “putting herself forward” and did not like to be in the spotlight. Yvonne was independent, self-reliant, with a strong set of principles, common sense and a determination and practicality often belied by her outward appearance. In later decades, she suffered quietly with pain from various sources. She was quick to perceive hypocrisy, insincerity and pretense, was defiant in the face of manipulation and angered by injustice. Everything had to be correct – which included a having a low tolerance for clutter and dust. Yvonne was upset at extravagance or waste, hated paying interest. All of this either contributed to her survival from, or were the result of, having to have found her own way in life starting at the age of 15. Her difficult childhood left her with a remarkable depth of understanding and empathy, for children, always putting other’s needs ahead of her own. She affected more lives more deeply than she realized – including the life of her husband of 53 years, who saw himself as occasionally unperceptive or insufficiently appreciative. Above all Yvonne lived for her children and grandchildren. We will miss you unbelievably. Relatives and friends are invited to a gathering with buffet at the Triwood Community Association (2244 Chicoutimi Dr. NW) on Friday, March 31, 2017 from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Informal attire.
