Obituary for Sam Bombay
The family of Sam Bombay is sad to announce his passing on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Riverside Health Care Facilities. Sam passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
He was born January 25, 1941 in Emo, Ontario to Sam and Christina Bombay (nee Wilson).
Sam grew up in Manitou. He was one of the first Natives to attend Fort Frances High School. He left school at grade 11 to look for work. He moved to Atikokan and lived with his sister Joyce until he could get settled. There he found work in the Steep Rock Iron Mines. After about 4 years, Sam moved to Dryden where he worked in the mill. Also while in Dryden, Sam had the pleasure of playing goalie for the Dryden Rockets. A few years later they moved back to Manitou.
Among many of his jobs, Sam was very proud of being the first Band Administrator for Manitou Rapids. Sam spent many years working for the Band in various positions. Eventually, Sam went on to work for the Indian Inspection Unit. In his final years of working, he once again ended up working for the Band as Historian. To him this wasn’t a job…it was a pleasure as this was one of his favourite things to do.
Some of Sam’s hobbies included photography, playing guitar and the researching the history of families of the Rainy River First Nations.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Christina Bombay; brothers, Alfred, Harry, Ray, Kenneth, Calvin; his sisters, Edna and Florence and his daughter, Theresa and grandson, Desmond.
Sam leaves behind his beloved wife of 27 years, Geraldine. Sam also leaves his children Tony, Angela (Rick), Marvin, Donald, Darren, Susan, Marian and Melvin. Grandchildren Brett, Samantha, Andrea, Kristina, Aaron, Ashley and great-grandchildren Aiden, Hailey, Daeton, Keisha, Ashden and Alex, his sister Joyce Gawlik and many nieces and nephews.
A wake will be held Friday, October 12, 2012 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Rainy River First Nations Community Gymnasium with funeral services held Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m.
Officiating the funeral service will be Pastor Ken Funk of Thunder Bay.
Honourary Pallbearers: Robert Bombay, Tony Bombay, Brett LeGarde, Aaron Bombay, Calvin Bombay Jr. and Greg Bombay Sr.
