Russell A. MacKinlay
1918-2017
Russell Anthony MacKinlay, passed away
peacefully on December 14, 2017 surrounded by his
family.
Russell was born on September 26, 1918 in Trenton, Nova Scotia. He
graduated from Mount Allison University and the Technical University
of Nova Scotia with his Bachelor of Engineering.
During his time at Mount Allison University, Russell attended the
Officers Training Program and then served in the Royal Canadian Navy
in the North Atlantic during World War II.
After the war, he worked in Quebec as a Mechanical Engineer and
returned to Nova Scotia to go into business with his father-in-law at
Patterson’s Store in Berwick.
Russell also worked for Marlite Enterprise before he began his
teaching career at Central Kings Rural High School. He taught for
nearly 20 years before retiring. Russell was a passionate educator and
shared his enthusiasm for learning with everyone he
met.
Russ and Barb were world travelers, and shared a particular love for
Barbados where he enjoyed his winters for more than 25 years. His last
trip was in 2014 at the age of 96.
He spent the last three years of his life at the Sutherland Harris
Veterans Unit in Pictou, Nova Scotia.
Russell was predeceased by his parents Bella (Munroe) and Sam
MacKinlay, his sister Mae (Roy), his wife Barbara (Patterson), and
daughter Margaret, known lovingly as Meg.
He is survived by his three children, Hartt (Carolyn), Ian (Marilyn),
and Catherine MacLean (Stirling); his eight grandchildren, Patrick
(Janine), Wendy (Jason), Colin (Lauren), Rory, Ryan, Lindsay (Robie),
Gillian (Jeremy), and Barbara; and his ten great-grandchildren, Logan,
Jayden, Kohen, Piper, Adriana, Jude, Emmett, Lane, Kinley and
Elliott.
Thank you to the entire care team and volunteers at the Pictou
Veterans Unit and the Aberdeen Hospital, and to Doctors Cooper,
George, Schnare and Kwasnik.
Russell has been cremated under the care of R.H. Porter Funeral Home
in New Glasgow. Interment will be at the family plot in Aylesford,
Nova Scotia.
