Roberta Joy McKay
Roberta Joy McKay passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2017
at 2 AM at The Moncton Hospital. She was born April 3, 1957 at Grace
Maternity Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of
Merrill Raymond McKay and Marjorie Jean (Taylor) McKay. She always
said she had to be a big brother to her younger brother, Merrill
Austin Taylor McKay (Mavis Eileen (Lyons)) and an older sister to her
younger sister, Reta Margaret McKay.
Joy asked Jesus into her heart at the age of 18 months. At
four at a Jimmy Snow evangelical meeting she went forward, not for
salvation, but to pray for the others. At eight she felt the call to
become a doctor because a missionary said Africa needed
doctors.
She went to St. Henri from Grades1-8, Beausejour for Grade 9
and Harrison Trimble for Grades 10-12. Then she went to Dalhousie to
become a doctor, but when it did not happen, she changed to a Bachelor
of Arts and Education. She was qualified to teach French, but when she
couldn’t get a full time teaching job, she became a Manager
Trainee at Kmart in Fredericton.
In May 1980 she was diagnosed as suffering from Bipolar
Affective Disorder. This disease eventually would cause her to retire
due to her disability, thus having to give up working in the
accounting field which she loved. Before the Accounting job at LeBlanc
Nadeau, she had completed the Business Technology in both Data
Processing and Accounting at NBCC.
She worked at Data Master in Fredericton for a short period
of time until her car accident in 1983, which left her with a knee
that would not bend more than 60 degrees.
Joy was very active in Church work. She could play the piano
and the guitar. From the age of 16 she composed her own
songs.
Family and friends were very important to her and the birth
of her niece, Sarah Elizabeth (McKay) Wilson (Chris) in 1985 was a joy
to her. Then in 2016, when Sarah and Chris had their miracle baby
girl, Christen Elizabeth Wilson, Joy was thrilled to become a great
aunt.
At the turn of the century, Joy put her songs in a form of a
songbook and enjoyed giving it out as part of her sister
Reta’s GUM – God’s Unicorn Ministry.
Eventually her music was put on CD’s to pass out, too, with
her songbook. She also wrote poetry and Reta would put her poems on
the white board at Kenneth Spencer Memorial Home where her mother is
now being cared for.
In the year 2000, she had congestive heart failure and by
2006 she had to go on oxygen full time. This condition is what
eventually took her home to be with the LORD.
Joy lived up to her name. She was a joy to be around and when
she was truly herself, she loved to pun. Playing Scrabble with her Dad
was also a favorite past time.
Joy’s family wish to thank Dr. Natalie Sheehan and
The Moncton Hospital for their great care of Joy during her last days
and especially Extra Mural for theirs, as well.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road,
Moncton (858-1995) on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A
Service to celebrate and honor Joy’s life will be held at
Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 2:00
pm, with her brother, Merrill Austin Taylor McKay, officiating. A
reception will follow the service in the Funeral Home Reception
Centre. Interment will be held in the Wesleyan Cemetery,
Doaktown.
If you would like to donate something in her memory, we know
she would appreciate donating to CEF – Child Evangelism
Fellowship of Canada, P.O. Box 165, Stn. Main, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2G9 or
the charity of your choice. Private online condolences for the family
