Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
Robert (Bob) Clifford Tivy
Lt. Col, BSc (Hon), P.Eng, EM, CD
October 16, 1923 – November 12, 2017
Following a Remembrance Day ceremony, Lt. Colonel Robert C. Tivy (retired) passed on peacefully from this life to the next. The death at age 94 of its patriarch marks the end of an era for the Tivy clan. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Jane and her husband John Johnston, Mary Tivy and her husband Bob Harris, grandchildren Laura (Jamie), Stephanie (Peter), Alastair (Vira), and great-grandchildren Will, Sam, Olivia, Sophia and Nina, as well as nieces and nephews Marnie, Janis, Sandra, Randy and Shawn and their families. Survived by his brother-in-law Ron Pue, and by his dear friend and companion Joyce Worton. Predeceased by his wife Ethel Wilson (2010), his brother Norman Tivy (2009) and sister Jane Pue (2016).
Born into a working class family in Peterborough, Ontario, Bob lived a life guided by the principles of service, loyalty and civility. The outbreak of the Second World War altered his life path in ways he could not foresee. A high school drop out and factory worker, he enlisted as an underage soldier in the militia in 1939 and transferred to active service in 1941. As he was readying for deployment to the Pacific War, Japan surrendered. Bob was then able to complete his high school diploma and enter Queen’s University under the Veteran’s Rehabilitation Act, gaining an education and career prospects he could have otherwise not imagined possible. He never forgot this significant opportunity and remained a loyal supporter of both institutions for the rest of his life. He graduated in 1951 with an Honours Electrical Engineering degree leading to a successful career with Black and Decker as President and Chairman of the Board (Canada) and Corporate Vice-President, International Operations. One of his proudest business achievements was the Black and Decker Workmate.
Bob stayed active with the militia until 1968, retiring as Lt. Colonel and Commanding Officer of the Brockville Rifles. His natural leadership skills and relentless energy extended into his community where he chaired school boards, service clubs and other organizations. To his family, he gained the title “Himself”.
His beautiful and talented wife Ethel Wilson guided this force of a man with love, threats and humour. Married 3 weeks after V.E. day in 1945 they spent the next 65 years together in Brockville, Los Angeles, and Baltimore, retiring to Naples, Florida and Sapphire, North Carolina. After her death, Bob moved back to Kingston, Ontario to be close to his family, his alma mater and his military affiliations. He became an active member of St. George’s Cathedral and a devoted companion to Joyce Worton. We are grateful to have had these last years with him, as he now had leisure to spend with his growing family and time to reflect on his life. As he recently observed, “My priorities and values all relate to family, and wanting to be perceived as a capable, decent guy.” These goals were well met.
We thank the wonderful staff at Fairmount Home, Battersea, who cared for Bob in his last year of life. We cannot overstate the quality of care and loving kindness they gave him. With their support, he remained optimistic, engaging, and a gentleman to the end.
A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Bob’s life will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. George, 207 King Street E. Kingston, Ontario, on November 25, at 2 pm.
