Richard “Dick Baker - May 24

Richard “Dick Baker – May 24, 1940 – December 11, 2016

BAKER, RICHARD PAUL (DICK) 1940-2016
The family of Dick Baker sadly announces his passing on December 11, 2016, in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Dick’s life enriched, and was enriched by, his family; he was enveloped in their love. He relished sharing family history and traditions, holidays and celebrations with his wife Barbara (nee Finlay) during their 54 years of marriage; their daughter, Heather, her husband Don Boonstra, and their children Megan, Chris and Matthew; their son Eric, his wife Lynn, and their children Courtney, Morgan and Pierce.
Dick also leaves to mourn his sister Esme (Roy Nystrom) and their daughters, as well as his brother Stan Baker. Dick enjoyed a warm, close relationship with Barbara’s siblings and their spouses and families, Bev and Tom Sawyer, Betty and Michael Dean, and David and Barbara Finlay. Dick’s roots were in the farming community of Ponoka, where he, his sister and brother and cousins spent their formative years together. Cousin Robert and his wife Gloria have remained an important part of Dick and Barbara’s life, along with the large extended Baker family.
Dick had many dear friends with whom he enjoyed travel, bridge, story-telling, and hanging out at the lake. Deep friendships were forged through the Rotary Club of Edmonton Northeast and the community of First United Church, Fort Saskatchewan.
In his professional life, Dick was staunchly committed to the best interests of the students whom he served throughout his career. He filled a variety of roles with Edmonton Public Schools, and never lost sight of the diverse needs and talents of the young people in the District. As well, he was a trustee with Elk Island Public Schools; a consultant with Nichols Applied Management and the Public School Boards Association, working particularly with David King; and an instructor with Concordia University, working closely with Dr. June McCohnegy.
The family is planning a celebration of Dick’s life in May, 2017. Contributions to the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital Foundation ( www.fschf.ca ; 780-342-3115 ) in Dick’s honour would be much appreciated, as the family was thankful for the comfort and care Dick received there during his last days.
“And I will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of my hand.” Psalm 91
