Obituary Overview
Reverend Fr. Frank Anton Hegel, SMF
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful death of Fr. Frank Hegel on Christmas Eve at Scarboro Missions in Toronto.
Frank had three main focuses in life and they were family, faith and serving others. This was obvious in the way he lived his life in its entirety.
Frank was born on November 27, 1946 and spent most of his childhood on the farm in Allan, SK. In 1957 he moved with his family to Saskatoon where he completed high school at St. Paul’s High School and went on to get his Masters of Education Degree at the U of S. Frank then taught primary school and was appointed principal of St. Joseph’s School in Swift Current, SK. He also volunteered with CUSO, serving in St. Kitts in the West Indies and Botswana, Africa. In 1979, Frank joined Scarboro Missions and served in Chiclayo, Peru, until being recalled to Canada to work in the formation of new missioners. Frank’s strong faith called him to the priesthood and on December 8, 1984 he was ordained in Saskatoon. In 1990 he returned to Chiclayo, Peru until 1993 when he began a new assignment in the Diocese of Riobamba, Ecuador, serving as pastor of Santa Faz Church. In 1997, he was appointed Rector of the diocesan Christ the Good Shepherd Seminary and Rector of the Cathedral in Riobamba. In 2001, he returned to Canada and the following year was appointed Treasurer of Scarboro Missions. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease several years ago, Frank continued to live an exemplary life with courage and fortitude.
He is predeceased by his parents Edward and Anne and survived by his siblings, Helene Sander (Joe), Richard (Gail), Mary Ann, Ken (Valerie), and Terry (Mary), along with numerous nephews and nieces.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone at Scarboro Missions in Toronto for the loving care and support extended to Frank over the years.
Vigil will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 1, 2018 and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Both services will be held at Holy Family Cathedral (123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon). Rite of Committal will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
