SUTHERLANDS RIVER – R. Sterling Rhyno, 93, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Sutherlands River and Thorburn, passed away Monday, January 16, 2017 in the Manor.
Born in Marysvale, he was a son of the late Andrew Beecher Rhyno and Ruby (Corkum) (Rhyno) Hunsley. Prior to retirement, Sterling had been employed as a snowplow and grader operator with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation. In earlier years, he had been a truck driver and a self-employed forestry worker. Sterling had been a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Blue Mountain prior to joining Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn. He possessed an inventive mind and was happiest creating and working outside. Sterling was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great great-grandfather who enjoyed being surrounded by his family.
Surviving are his wife of 72 years, I. Doris (Patrick) Rhyno; daughters, Gail McEwan, London, Ont.; Judy (Gordon) MacKenzie, Scotsburn; Jo-Anne (Marshall) Smith, Grants Lake; Cathy (Al) Andrews, Waverley; Wendy (Glen) Rhyno-Gillis, Calgary, Alta.; Darlene (Darrin) Wilson, Black Creek, Vancouver Island, B.C.; Donna (Tom) Adamson, Lyons Brook; sons, Ross (Rose) Rhyno, Stoney Creek, Ont.; David Rhyno, Edmonton, Alta.; Donnie (Karen) Rhyno, MacLellan’s Brook; grandchildren, Billy, Patricia (Kevin), Wanda (Bobbie), Cheryl (Roddy), Debbie, Jennifer, Angela (Trevor), David (Tawyna), Michael (Christine), Steve (Shasta), Ashlea (Mike), Andrea, Ben (Jaimie), Andrew (Felicia) and Alana (Mike); great-grandchildren, Alex, Emma, Robbie (Lindsay), Lauren, Ethan, Taylor, Ian, Jacob, Owen, Liam, Luke, Olivia, Avyen, Amelia, Brody and Jayce; great, great-grandchildren, Seth, Scarlett and Charlie; sister, Edna Findley, Chelmsford, Ont.; brother, Edward (Armonde) Rhyno, Thorburn; sisters-in-law, Elaine Rhyno, Valley View Villa, Riverton; Jean Rhyno, New Glasgow; Honey Rhyno, Mieklefield; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Sterling “Buddy” Rhyno; granddaughter, Sheri-Lynn McEwan; sisters, Mary (Stewart) Murphy, Edythe (Edwin) Lowe, Dorothy (Harold) Miller and Catherine (John) Van Grunsven; brothers, Oscar, John, Emerson (Mabel), Garfield (Hughena) and Leonard; brother-in-law, Russell Findley.
The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 with Pastor Alan Klein officiating. Private interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
