Pieter Vermeulen - July 11

Penetanguishene — Pieter Vermeulen, 79, died peacefully Sunday, July 30, 2017 while enjoying his favourite pastime; sailing with his family.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Cornelia Adriana Bouwina Vermeulen; his children; Brian (Lisa), Beth (Cliff), Matt (Mylinh), Marie (Mike), and his grandchildren; Jake, Dirk, Hannah, Delta, Dalton, Duncan, Abigale, Beth, Lia, Hilda and Andy.
Born in Ijmuiden Holland, the son of Albert and Maria Vermeulen, he came to Canada in 1952 with his siblings. Pieter was the middle brother of 8 siblings; Fred (Anne), the late Cor (survived by May), Albert (predeceased by Anke), Betty (Henry), Dirk (Wilma), Henny (Brian), Len (Sue) and Chris (predeceased by Jack).
As many people have witnessed, Pieter’s love, commitment and relationship with Christ was evident and felt through all that he did. His background in business helped him contribute to the growth and expansion of many churches. He was a good and faithful servant of the Lord, sharing his beautiful voice in Christ’s name through prayer, readings and his gift of song. We all have comfort knowing that he is where his soul has always known he would journey.
Pieter had a passion for sciences and in the early 60’s, began his career in research and development for Proctor and Gamble. His career success continued on with the Donut Corporation of America, Pillsbury and finally moving him to Vice Presidency with Robin Hood MultiFoods in Minneapolis. His enthusiasm for the community of his peers in the sciences, was felt by the family well into his retirement.
Pieter had just celebrated his 79th birthday and his 55th wedding anniversary with his beautiful bride, taking their last trip to the Arctic Circle. The trip began in the country of his birth place, bringing them through the gorgeous fjords of Norway, where they received yet another nautical certificate of sailing achievement. Coming home and sharing their happiness in their “best trip ever”, Pieter took his wife, daughter and grandchildren on a sailing trip in Georgian Bay where he had his final day on the boat. Spent laughing, swimming, sailing and loving his family, he said, “This is where I’m supposed to be today” and finished the evening in God’s hands.
Visitation will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 539 Hugel Avenue, Midland on Wednesday, August 2nd from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, August 3rd from 1 p.m. until time of the memorial service at 2 p.m. Charitable donations can be made in memory of Pieter to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Global Vision. Arrangements entrusted to LeClair Cremation Centre.
