Peter Thomas McGuigan
McGuigan, Peter Thomas, 74, of Halifax passed away peacefully with his nephew, Joel Baglole, by his side on December 8, 2017 at the QEII Halifax Infirmary after a battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James and Stella McGuigan. A proud and prolific local historian, Peter published several books about the history of Halifax and Nova Scotia, the province he loved. Topics he wrote about included Irish immigrants who settled in Nova Scotia, the history of Saint Mary’s University and a biography of James Charles McGuigan, the longtime Archbishop of Toronto who was a distant relative of Peter’s and one of the few Canadians appointed a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by the Pope. Several of Peter’s books, including one on “Historic South End Halifax,” can still be found in local bookstores. Peter had been working on a new book about the historic Halifax Poor House at the time of his death. In addition to his historical books, Peter wrote a regular column called “Looking Back” about the evolution of Halifax’s south end for the Southender magazine and a heritage column in The Chronicle Herald. A graduate of both Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s Universities, Peter held a Master’s degree in Atlantic Canadian Studies and was a regular fixture around the Saint Mary’s History Department and campus library. He also spent quite a bit of time unearthing facts for his books at the Halifax Archives. Spirited and independent, Peter was a lifelong news junkie who enjoyed quizzing his nieces and nephews on current events, and was known to usually win at family games of Trivial Pursuit. He is survived by his twin brother, James McGuigan; three sisters, Mary Baglole (McGuigan), Catherine McGuigan, Sharon McGuigan; nieces Deirdre McGuigan and Christy DiLello (Baglole); and nephews Neil McGuigan, Justin Ing, Joel Baglole and Matthew Baglole. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m., Sunday, December 17 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, December 18 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to Feed Nova Scotia.
