Noreen Smith
SMITH (WILLIS) NOREEN,
Born December 31, 1933, in North Preston, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her loving family, on December 25, 2017. Noreen is the daughter of the Late James and Margareta Willis, and the wife of the Late Horace Smith Sr. for 65 years. Noreen is survived by her daughters; Jennifer Downey (Texas), North Preston, Worneita Stanford (Joel) Boston, Mass, Christiline Downey (Christopher), North Preston, Anita, Halifax and Samteen, North Preston. Sons; Darrell (Darlene) Toronto, ON, Horace Jr. (Janice), North Preston, Randy (Nancy), Dartmouth, Mark (Angela), Samuel (Tina), Matthew (Claudia), all of North Preston. Rev. Jivaro (Mary), Toronto, ON, Ivan (Jennifer), Dartmouth; 47 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren; Brothers, Ivan Willis (Muriel), Levi, North Preston; Godparents, Mr.and Mrs. Michael Williams; godchildren, Yvonne, Elaine, Leroy, Racquel, Spencer, Dauphine, Tasha, Sasha; best friends, Myrtle Downey, Margret Downey, Viola Cain, and Lynn Jones.
Noreen was predeceased by her daughters; Noreen and Karen Lee; granddaughter Cicely Downey; sisters; Theresa, Janet, Layola, Ethel, Kathleen, Gertrude, Shirley; brothers, Harry, Austin, Nathaniel, James Jr., Samuel and Sydney; and godchild Lavonne.
Noreen accepted the Lord and was baptized at a young age. She served faithfully in Saint Thomas United Baptist Church for over 70 years; served as finance chairperson, member of the senior choir and was president of the Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years. Noreen was honored by the AUBA Women’s Institute in October 2005 for 50 years of continuous service.
Noreen attended Dartmouth High School to continue her education and was employed with the Jr. High and Cole Harbour High schools for several years ensuring the students of North Preston were treated equally and given the best of education and opportunities the Halifax Regional School Board had to offer.
Noreen had unconditional love for her community; she was truly a pillar and community advocate for North Preston. North Preston has Noreen to thank for its many positive changes and growth. She formed a Community Concern Committee to address housing, education and various community issues; formed the Senior Citizens Group of North Preston, assisted in the formation of the first Cadets Corp in North Preston. With dignity and confidence, Noreen represented North Preston at many meetings with elected government officials and legislature house settings concerning the many issues and needs of the community of. Noreen played an important role in the way of living in North Preston; she was instrumental in the implications of water and sewage, construction of Nelson Whynder School, North Preston Recreation Centre, affordable housing and paving of roads. She was never afraid to challenge government officials and make them accountable to the concerns of North Preston.
Arrangements in care of Atlantic Funeral Homes, Dartmouth, NS. Service to be held, 12:00 pm, Tuesday, January 2, 2018, in St. Thomas Baptist Church, North Preston. Officiating, Rev. Daryl Gray and assisted by Pastor. Jivaro Smith. Burial will take place in St. Thomas Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Thomas Baptist Church.
