NETTIE (AGANETA) TOEWS (née Sawatzky)
Peacefully, on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Bethania Personal Care Home, Mom passed away with her family by her side, two weeks after her 93rd birthday. Mom will be sadly missed by her two sons, Raymond (Terry) of Victoria and Larry (Holly) of St. Andrews and two daughters, Lorna Friesen and Valerie (Tim) Stuart of Winnipeg; eight grandchildren, Dayna Benjamin (Will), Corey Toews (Aaron), Kristin McKinley (Darby), Kurtis Friesen (Chelsea), Jaime Toews (Sylvester), Stephen Toews (Jennell) and Alyssa and Kiana Stuart. She also leaves nine great grandchildren, Silas and Cooper Benjamin; Danica and Logan McKinley; Ellymay, Autumn and Jakob Friesen; and Alexis and Sadie Toews. She will also be missed by her brother Frank Sawatzky of Abbotsford, sister Frieda Klassen (Walter) of Calgary, brother-in-law Frank Toews (Mary) and sister-in-law Eva Toews of Abbotsford, numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends.
Nettie was predeceased by her husband Peter Toews in 2001, parents Heinrich and Aganeta Sawatzky, brothers Henry, George and Herman, son-in-law John Friesen in 2009 and infant twin great granddaughters Kira and Lydia McKinley in 2010.
She was born on October 14, 1924 in Griegorjewka, Ukraine. In 1925, at the age of one year, she crossed the ocean with her parents to settle in southern Manitoba. Her family lived in various parts of southern Manitoba. In 1947, at the age of 22, she moved with her family to Abbotsford, BC. While living there, she would go for walks with some friends from church—the Toews sisters—and their handsome brother Peter took notice and offered to walk her home.
Nettie and Peter were married on March 19, 1949 in Abbotsford. They settled and farmed in Brunkild, Manitoba for 25 years and raised their three oldest children on the farm. They retired from farming and moved to the Fort Richmond area of Winnipeg in 1973 where they raised their youngest daughter. In the city, she began volunteering at a MCC Thrift Shop, at her daughter’s school and canvassing door to door with various charitable organizations. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Her many talents included cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting and crocheting. Her recipes, afghans and other creations can be found in her children’s’ and grandchildren’s homes. After Mom and Dad retired from farming they enjoyed travelling: camping throughout Canada, especially to visit family in Alberta and BC; road trips around Canada and the U.S.; trips to Hawaii, Alaska, California and Portugal, and later, bus tours.
In 1999, when Dad moved into Bethania Personal Care Home, Mom moved into the adjoining Bethania Haus apartment block. Here she made many friends and volunteered extensively in the personal care home for the next 15 years, helping feed some residents, taking them to medical appointments and helping with recreational activities. She even led an exercise group with her neighbours at the Bethania Haus apartment block until the age of 90! She was very proud of the certificates of appreciation she received for her volunteer work.
Mom was always a cheerful person with a positive attitude towards life. Everyone she met became a friend. Even as her health deteriorated, necessitating an end to volunteer work and a move into the personal care home, she remained cheerful and upbeat and enjoyed new friendships and participated in many recreational and spiritual activities. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed taking her for walks in the beautiful Bethania
Gardens and looking at family photos together.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Bethania Personal Care Home for the special care, compassion and support given to our mother and our family during the last two and a half years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethania Mennonite Memorial Foundation.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.
