Michael John McLenahan
Michael John McLenahan
— teacher, musician, gardener, cooking aficionado, sports
enthusiast, father, friend who died at home in Fredericton on December
29, 2016 at the age of 68. The proud son of Irish (Roland [Roly]
McLenahan) and Ukranian (Estelle Sharik) parentage, he was known to
many as Michael, Mike, or by some variation on the name
“Buck” from his days in music.
Michael was blessed with an open and generous heart, a large
personality, and a welcoming nature. From both sides of his family
tree, his door was always open to share his table with others. His
musical talents brought him neither fame nor fortune, even though many
still remember him as the bassman with well-known local groups such as
Children of Stone, Naked Lunch, Buckshot. He was recently inducted
into the Minto Music Wall of Fame for his contributions to the music
community in the area.
Michael’s real passion was teaching. He loved the
excitement he sensed from students about learning, and the
satisfaction he got from seeing them progress into adulthood. He
taught at Minto High School for 29 years, and touched the lives of
thousands of Minto’s young people. After retirement, he
taught for four years in secondary schools in China, and fancied
himself a student of Chinese language and culture.
Michael is survived by his daughter Emily Emberley (Kyle) and
her mother Linda Llewellyn Pond of Fredericton, and by his daughters
Chloe and Maggie McLenahan and their mother Julie McLenahan of
Mike will be missed by many others: friends and colleagues
from his teaching days; friends from his music days including Pat,
Peter and Tom from The Lunch, and Doug, Bubs, Stewart, Rollie and many
others; by many members of the extended family on both the McLenahan
and Sharik sides of the family; and by many special friends who
stepped up particularly in these difficult past few years —
Rick, Glenn, Scott, Gange, Pat, Doug, Linda, Stephen, Brian, Dr.
Broeren and cousin Joanna Estelle [Storoschuk].
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 02, 2017
at 2:00PM, in the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel with Reverend Monte
Peters officiating. Donations to a charitable organization of your
choice would be an appropriate farewell to our friend.
