of Edmonton- Alberta
Sep 1- 1939 – Oct 30- 2017
Maryetta Harper, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2017 in the afternoon at her home, surrounded by her closest loved ones.
Maryetta is survived by her son Robert Blackett (Jill McNichol); daughter Kelly Blackett
(Darren Dombrosky) and granddaughter Evie Dombrosky.
Maryetta was a born and raised Edmontonian. She grew up in Garneau with a tight knit group of friends who she remained extremely close with for her entire life. Summers as a youth were spent in New York City and the Atlantic Highlands with her mother Dorothy’s family, helping her to develop a lifelong passion for New York and opening her eyes to the wonder of travelling. Raised on the golf course, Maryetta became an accomplished amateur player and the 1958 Provincial Junior champion. Maryetta’s sense of adventure and love of different cultures was also fostered by winning a World University Service of Canada Scholarship to study on a kibbutz in Israel, the first Canadian woman to receive this honour.
Community service was a hallmark of Maryetta’s life. Through volunteer leadership roles with the Commonwealth Games, Fort Edmonton, the Canadian Ladies Golf Association, the Junior League of Edmonton and the Girl Guides of Alberta she left an indelible positive mark on our city and the many of us who live here. A proud graduate of the University of Alberta, Maryetta became a teacher who worked in both the Edmonton Public and Devon school systems. Her devotion to learning and education was an intrinsic part of her character and she shaped the lives of many students over her career.
A sense of family was incredibly important to Maryetta. In addition to her devotion to her immediate family, she warmly embraced the extended Blackett, Harper and Buysen Clans. Maryetta called the last chapter of her life “joy in the rusty years” as she travelled with friends and family, spent time at our beloved mountain house and played hard with her granddaughter Evie. Her curiosity, candor, can-do attitude, love of learning, sense of adventure and joie d’vivre will be missed by characters of all ages.
In keeping with her wishes, for those of you who are local we invite you to join us for an open house and fond remembrances of a one of a kind lady at Maryetta’s home on November 4th and 5th between 1 and 5 pm. A larger celebration of Maryetta’s life will be held in the spring of 2018 at the Fort Edmonton carousel. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maryetta’s name will be gratefully accepted at the Fort Edmonton Foundation, PO Box 67112 Meadowlark RPO, Edmonton, Alberta T5R 5Y3.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Maryetta Harper (Maiden: Thornton) – of Edmonton- Alberta
