Lee Weldon MacDonald
1933-2017
Lee Weldon MacDonald passed
away peacefully late Christmas Day at Stella Maris de Kent Hospital in
Ste Anne de Kent, New Brunswick. He was born in Chatham, NB,
January, 1933; son of the late John and Edna (MacArthur)
MacDonald. He grew up in Kouchibouguac,
NB where he attended the local school, Potters
Mills. He continued his education at
the convent school in neighbouring St. Louis de Kent and completed his
high school education at Mount Allison Academy, Sackville,
NB. Following that, he graduated
from Ranger School in Fredericton.
He loved
being in the woods, spoke often of the people who
worked around his father’s sawmill,
his
adventures hauling pulp with his uncles and his time scaling in the
camps in northern New Brunswick.
After
his marriage to Carol Wilson, of West Branch, Kent County, NB, he
worked in Bathurst and Albert County, NB but in 1960 they moved their
young family to Margaree Valley, Cape Breton.
Lee was
one of the first employees of the new pulp mill in Port Hawkesbury, NS
and worked as a woodlands manager until his retirement in 1991. Lee
was an active member of Wilson United Church in Margaree Centre and
Sircom Masonic Lodge, Whycocomagh.
He and
Carol spent their next fifty years in Margaree where they almost lost
their “come from away” status.
With
very heavy hearts in 2012 they decided leave their many friends in
Cape Breton to return to their native Kent County, after so many years
of travelling from Cape Breton to spend time with their family. They
loved spending time with their siblings, nieces and nephews and old
friends. These last few years were so rich for Lee and Carol because
of the love and support of their siblings and extended families as
well as visits, emails and phone calls from their Margaree friends.
Lee will be
missed
by his wife, Carol (Wilson) MacDonald of West Branch; his two
daughters, Betty Lou Bennett (Mark) of Glenville, NS and Susan
MacDonald (Arthur Baxter) of Bedford, NS; four sons, John (Nannette)
of Sydney, NS, Gordon (Shari) of Milton, PEI, Colin of West Branch, NB
and David (Nicole) of Bedford, NS; 12 grandchildren; Rachel, Luke,
Leah, Adam’ Emily, Jack, Zachary, Cameron, Ryan, Lillian,
Jane and Grace.
He will also be missed by
his three sisters, Doris McIlroy (Harry) of Kanata, ON, Audrey
Archibald (Leland) of Oromocto, NB and Georgina Daigle (Tommy) of
Kouchibouguac, NB; two brothers, Ivan (Marion) MacDonald of Saint
John, NB and Kenneth (Dolly) MacDonald of McKees Mills,NB;
Carol’s brothers, Fred (Winnie) Wilson of West Branch, NB,
Trueman (Betty) Wilson of Salisbury, NB and his many nieces and
nephews.
Visitation will be held at
Thompson’s Funeral Home, Richibucto on Friday from 2-4 and
7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, December
30th, 2017 at 2:00pm, Zion Presbyterian Church, West Branch with Rev.
Claudia Kellar officiating.
Arrangements are in the professional care of
Thompson’s Funeral Home, Richibucto
(523-4252).
