Obituary for Kathleen Winnifred “Kaye” Menard (née Ryer)
Kathleen (Kaye) Winnifred Menard (nee Ryer), 85, died on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital following a short illness.
Kaye was born on November 17, 1932, in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, to John and Rhoda Ryer. After graduating from high school and taking teachers’ training, Kaye’s first job was as a teacher in a one-room school house in rural Nova Scotia. She later moved to Halifax where she began a career in the financial services industry, starting as a bank teller and advancing to become a trusted investment advisor. Soon after arriving in Halifax, Kaye met her future husband, Joseph (Joe) Lionel Menard, an aviation technician with the Royal Canadian Navy. After marrying in 1953, Kaye and Joe lived for a number of years in married quarters on the Shearwater Naval Base with their four children.
Kaye, Joe, and family moved to Ottawa in 1969, where they were to remain for the rest of their lives. In addition to her busy work life, Kaye was an active member of the St. Augustine’s parish, singing in the church choir for many years. Kaye was pre-deceased by Joe in 1993.
Kaye is survived by: her children Stephanie (Robert), Lisa (Ken), Eric, and Marc (Paula); grandchildren Rowan, Marie, Marc, Rae, Rhys, Kelsey and Lucas; great grandchildren, Dagan, Cassidy, Marley, and Bodie; and by her siblings Rhoda (Peter), Phyllis (John), Beverly (David), Cheryl (Ralph), and John.
In keeping with Kaye’s wishes, there will be no public viewing or funeral. Next summer, family will gather from across Canada in Nova Scotia for a celebration of her life. During the past year, Kaye enjoyed participating in day programs at the Carleton Lodge and Abbotsford House. In appreciation for the care and support she received from the wonderful staff and volunteers at those programs, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Donors Trust at Carleton Lodge re: Adult Day Program (55 Lodge Road, Nepean, Ontario K2C 3H1) or the Glebe Centre Inc. re: Abbotsford House Day Program (77 Monk Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5A7).
