Juverna Marken
MARKEN, Juverna May age 90 of Swift Current, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully October 1, 2017 at The Meadows Long Term Care Facility. The funeral service was held at St. Olaf Lutheran Church at 2:00 pm on Friday October 6, 2017 with Pastor Linda Hall officiating. The organist was Arlie Neufeld. Special music was provided by Brent and Doris Wig, Joyce Olesen, and Arlene Baschak. The eulogy was read by Juverna’s four children. The interment service was held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park in Swift Current. The pallbearers were Juverna’s much loved grandchildren and their spouses: Theodore and Meagan Baschak, Krystal and Evan Moore, Tatiana and Barret Procyshyn, Jared and Janelle Hagen, and Stacey Hagen.
Juverna is survived by her four children and their spouses whom she loved as her own: Dolores and Wayne Hagen, Arlene and Richard Baschak, Garth Marken, Kevin and Lucy Marken. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their children: Theodore and Meagan Baschak, Krystal and Evan Moore (Aubrey and Atticus), Tatiana and Barret Procyshyn (Anders and a soon-to-be-born baby), Jared and Janelle Hagen (Sawyer and Remy), and Stacey Hagen. Juverna was predeceased by her grandfather Hans Olson in 1923, her grandmother Ingeborg Olson in 1928, her grandfather Thorvald Hansen in 1938, her father-in-law Erick Marken in 1959, her father Oscar Olson in 1962, her grandmother Charlotte Hansen in 1968, her mother-in-law Ingrid Marken in 1978, her sister-in-law Mabel Horvey in 1995, her husband Ernest Marken in 1997, her mother Gladys Olson in 1998, and her brother-in-law Lloyd Horvey in 2000. She is also survived by a niece Judy (Lorne) Purdy and a nephew Levern (Norma) Horvey and numerous cousins in Canada, the United States, Norway, and Sweden.
Juverna was born May 25, 1927 to Oscar and Gladys Olson on the family farm (7 miles south and 1 mile east of Admiral, SK). She attended Andersonville, Boule Creek, and Epinard Schools. She also attended Admiral High School before graduating from Grade 12 at the Saskatchewan Lutheran Bible Institute in Outlook, SK in 1944. She continued at SLBI taking 3 years of Bible school and graduated in 1947. Juverna completed her nurse’s training from the Moose Jaw General Hospital in 1950 and shortly thereafter qualified as a Registered Nurse. She was employed first in the hospital at Leader, SK, later in the operating room at the Swift Current Union Hospital, and lastly, in the clinic of Doctors Claman, Shnider, Katz, and Atkinson in Swift Current. She married Ernest Oliver Marken in 1953 in Swift Current and they moved into their home at 342 8th Avenue NW. This house was built by Ernest and his father and she lived here until the time of her stroke. She began the very busy full-time job of raising her four children in 1955.
Juverna loved her God! Her faith was a large part of her life! She was very interested in and attended almost all events at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Simmie Bible Camp, LCBI in Outlook, and CLBI in Camrose, AB were also very important to her. She loved to read so it followed that she took a very active role in the St. Olaf church library. In addition to raising her children, she was a very active homemaker and put much effort into her cooking, baking, and gardening which was all so well done! She loved to travel! Juverna and Ernest took many group tours around Canada, United States, and abroad including two special trips to Norway (the first trip with Ernest and the second trip with Dolores, Arlene, and Wayne). She had a huge interest in genealogy and documented much of Ernest’s and her family history. Overall, Juverna loved people and was so willing to help family, friends, and others in need!
In May 2011, Juverna became a full-time resident of the Palliser Care Centre and in September 2016 moved to The Meadows Long Term Care Facility. The family would like to thank the staff at the Palliser and at the Meadows for the sensitive, loving, and respectful care that Juverna received during her last years and days!
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Juverna may be made to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Memorial Fund (665 Central Ave. North, Swift Current, SK S9H 0M2) or to a charity of your choice.
